Controversial Books Should Be Banned In Canada

In 2016, a total of one thousand, six hundred and eighty- five novels have been banned in Canada (Montpetit). Many of these novels are said to be offensive, or portraying controversial media, and are therefore not allowed in schools or public libraries. These rules are put in place because the government believes this will protect the country, when in reality, hiding controversial content can destroy a civilization, due to the ignorance around the topic.
Making a society avoid unspoken issues does not solve the problem, it will only lead to more. A diverse library will have more topics that interest people, allowing plenty of citizens to enjoy reading. The more books that are available to the public eye, The more topics that are available to readers of all ages. This aids readers of all ages to find a text that they enjoy. Having a library that contains various topics will allow more people to gain interest in reading. The more people read, the more educated they become. People will also have more access to information from trustworthy sources, helping students or professors when they are writing important papers. A diverse library will interest more people into reading, overall making a more educated society. Novels that are banned stops access of content from a diverse set of authors. The American Library Association states that “estimates indicate that more than half of challenged or banned books are from non-white writers,” (Schaub). Novels that are banned prevent minorities from posting content. This can discourage aspiring writers, since they will be uninspired to write if they do not see people of their culture in the same occupation. Authors of banned novels will lose income, due to of the lack of people reading their novels. Banning an author's novel will cease their income from that source. This will make it difficult for an author to make a living off their work, especially if it is their only content. Through not allowing an author's book into the households of a society, the author will no longer make money off of their content.
