William Shakespeare is arguably one of the best playwrights in recent history, and it shows with how popular Shakespeare still is in modern times. During his life, April 1564 - April
1616, Shakespeare wrote 37 plays, 154 sonnets, and five long narrative poems. There is no doubt that William was linguistic, but there is doubt that his works are actually his own. Controversy over who wrote Shakespeare’s plays, or if Shakespeare was even a real person, is a white hot topic that is widely debated even to this day, and probably will be for years to follow. Shakespeare’s plays eventually became exclusive. From 1594 on Shakespeare’s plays were only performed by the Lord Chamberlain’s Men. The Lord Chamberlain’s Men was a play company owned by a group of players that included Shakespeare himself. Eventually this group become the leading playing company in London. The play company was awarded the royal patent by
King James I after the death of Queen Elizabeth in 1603. After being awarded the Lord
Chamberlain’s Men became formally known as the King’s Men. The company eventually had their own theatre built in 1599. The theatre was named the Globe and was located on the south bank of the River Thames. Records show of Shakespeare’s property purchases and investments show that him being affiliated with the King’s Men made him a very wealthy man. His wealth had property to show for it. In 1597 he bought the second largest home in Stratford.
Eventually Shakespeare’s name became a selling point and he had his name on title pages. Shakespeare would act in his own plays and plays of other playwrights after he became successful. During his success, Shakespeare made many plays that are still known today.
