There are many discussions surrounding child labor. There are people who give many statistics and statements on the benefits of child labor and those who give counterclaims and evidence against child labor. Many believe that child labor is beneficial to the families who are in need of extra income for their household. As a result, many children are not receiving an education, and are put under pressure by companies to manufacture their products. I however believe that these businesses should be held accountable for the welfare of these young laborers and should be providing better working conditions.

Children are being easily injured due to dealing with unfamiliar machinery. According to statistics in the early 2000s, over 50% of child labor are involved in hazardous and dangerous work environments which caused many injuries and deaths. Due to little government regulations for health and safety, many suffered from severe heat strokes and extreme cold spells. Children also suffered from mental stress as well as physical stress because of the harsh working conditions (Online Homeschool,1-3). When working under fear and small break sessions, many would commit suicide to escape the abuse by these companies. For example, according to Medical Daily, there are “6 major companies guilty of child labor” (Borreli, 2013). These companies are Philip Morris, Victoria’s Secret, Firestone, Nike, Hanes and Hershey’s. For example, “The Firestone Tire and Rubber Company has operated a rubber plantation in Harbel, Liberia for over 80 years” says the International Labor Rights Forum. Children working here are to carry multiple 70lb buckets filled with latex walking for many miles allowing pesticides to affect their health. But some measures being taken by agencies to help reduce injuries and fatalities by placing more efficient equipment for the farmers and laborers to use. Under the Children’s Act for Responsible Employment bill (CARE), parents can excuse their children from work, strengthen provisions among children's encounters to pesticides and a more detailed data collection from the Department of Labor (Borreli, 2013). Children would be able to leave work or not participate that day under their parents’ desire. Companies will have to take notice of the hazardous material children worked with and provide precautionary methods for the child’s health and safety and keep a log of how many hours the laborers were working each week.
