In the movie (Rings), a reviled tape goes round that promised to kill any individual who watched it following seven days. She was a stranded and relinquished young lady (Samara) who had psychic capacities which inadvertently tormented and even killed everyone around her, driving her folks to kill her by tossing her into a well, getting by for seven days and in the long run biting the dust. A VCR with the tape in it arrives in Professor Gabriel hands so he and a gathering of individuals called "The Sevens" are included in a trial including the reviled tape, watching and recording them, before passing the assignment to someone else called a "tail."
