Ah, a global warming deniers’ favorite line. AKA the “Antarctica cooling controversy.” The cooling controversy is the contradiction in the observed cooling of Antarctica between 1966 and 2000. During this time satellites have measured an increase of sea ice in Antarctica. Evidence that warming deniers are using to strengthen their claim that global warming is not real.
The controversy originated in Michael Crichton’s book, State of Fear, where he asserted that the cooling observed in Antarctica shows the lack of reliability of the global warming models; and climate theory in general. The release of the book led to other media outlets picking up the argument and labeling it the “Antarctic Cooling Controversy,” but the controversy is flawed
