In the 20th century women were able to see makeup as a form of femininity. In the early 20th century, ‘less is more’ was a popular trend. A paler look was pursued. Lemon juice was either consumed or applied as a facial tonic. As the era went on, the use of heavier makeup became a hype. To have a tan suggested that a lady was lower class so woman of the ‘better’ class would stay shaded for most of the time. By the 1910’s, cosmetics were widely ideentified from brands like Maxfactor. In the 1920’s they would spend their time using scarlet coloured, metal based lip liners to achieve the flawless cupids bow. By the 1930’s, makeup looks became more lustrous. Comb backed sides and lots of volume soon became a massive trend in the 60’s. By the 70’s many men grew their hair out, inspired by the hippie era. Hair gels were favoured, along with the hairdryers, hair straighteners and perm machines. Hair perming was introduced in 1905 as another method of curling hair. Cosmetics and hair products could be bought within department stores. Fashion in this century changed drastically going from haute couture with designers such as Christian Dior, Chanel, Dolce & Gabanna. It then changed to oriental to the flapper look and then there was the boyish figure and then poodle skirts, the teddy boy look, pvc clothing, miniskirts, jeans, hotpants, mod look, hippie look, disco, doc martin boots, retro and platform shoes. Over the years multiple different fashion deisgners and clothes became available in stores. Clothes were made from all different kinds of materials such as leather, cotton, denim, pvc plastic and tweed. As time went on there wasn’t drastic differences between the affluent and poor.
