In the 1800s, the United States experience an extensive increase of the production of cotton due to three major factors, consumer demand, the amount of resources, and the inventions of new technology. Where it all first began in the 1700s, when Britain created new machines and factories, increasing the production of cotton to create cloth. Hence, the US was in high demand to obtain British factory plans to copy their mills and technology for the growth of American cotton and cloth industries. Therefore in 1790, the first American mill was created, inspiring other American manufacturers to build mills similar to it.
