According to Eric Foner is his book, Give Me Liberty!, even though the market revolution and westward expansion occurred simultaneously in the North and the South, their combined effects heightened the nation’s sectional divisions. In some way, the most dynamic feature of the American economy wins the first thirty years of the nineteenth century was the rise of the Cotton Kingdom. It all started during the industrial revolution, which centered on factories producing cotton textiles with water-powered spinning and weaving machinery. All of these factories produced a massive demand for cotton.
After the War of 1812, America suffered from financial panic and the Union seemed to lack the ability to ebb and flow with disruption to order as exemplified by the lack of cooperation between all states. As cotton plantations thrived in the South, a different way of economy was produced through industry, paving a clear path to business building in the North. As shown in a graph showing the growth of trade and manufacturing, the North shows a vastly spreading industry but the South remains mostly disengaged (Document L). The importance was instead placed on agriculture, exemplified by Jefferson regarding inventions such as the cotton gin as gaining “considerable interest” for the “success...for family use” (Document M). When writing to Eli Whitney, Jefferson shows the curiosity in up and coming devices, but only those that may be worked by hands at home.
The American economy was greatly influenced by advancement in the 1800’s, which caused many changes in society and regional identities. Some of these advancements were in the areas of technology, agriculture and commerce. In this period we saw inventions such as the sewing machine, the waltham-lowell factory system, and railroads sweep the nation, and drastically alter the United States economy. The Industrial Revolution greatly increased the demand for southern cotton. Textile mills in the North and in Britain needed more and more cotton to make cloth. At first, southern planters could not meet the demand. They could grow plenty of cotton because the South’s soil and climate were ideal.

The first was that there was a huge tide of immigrants coming to America, second is that there was a lot of new inventions, and third being that the Civil War stimulated mass production techniques. Immigrants provided big companies with cheap labor, and lots of it. From 1880 to 1921, 23 million immigrants came to the U.S looking for work and opportunity.

Following the War of 1812 and the Era of Good Feelings, an overwhelming feeling of new beginnings, reform, and innovation signaled a new beginning in American History. In this new era, the Market Revolution or the 1st Industrial Revolution brought forth new changes in industry including steam powered engines as well as a boom in the textile industry and a development of simple machines needed to work the new tasks. By the early 1800s, cotton was the most profitable cash crop, and slave owners focused on clearing lands and securing laborers to proliferate cotton production. The lack of available, fertile land in coastal areas compelled the move into the southern interior, sparking a massive westward migration of planters and slaves. The demands and rewards of the "King Cotton" economy resulted in a fivefold population increase during the first six decades of the 19th century, but it kept the South an unsophisticated agricultural economy.

Along with the crops changing the slave trade grew to replace the economic short fall in the Chesapeake area. These changed occurred due to the supply and demand of commonly bought goods. In the antebellum period of South Carolina, cotton took complete control. Both Inland and Island farmers farmers relied on cotton thanks to the textile industry. After the invention named the cotton gin was invented, the cotton industry was changed forever. This new era had a good effect on the trade between other countries/states and the South.
