Courtney is a 43 year old married mother of two boys who completed an undergraduate degree in psychology in 2017, and is currently completing a graduate degree in counseling at Duquesne University. While living in the United Kingdom (UK) and after her children were born, she strived to balance her studies, work, friends and family, and achieved some success in the endeavor though generally felt she could establish a better balance. Courtney found she regularly prioritized her studies over seeing friends and did not make enough effort to socialize with others and nurture new friendships, yet she always worked to ensure her family needs were met. When she moved to the United States some five or so years ago, she made a promise to herself to make friends socialize regularly, particularly as there was potential to become isolated if she did not make the effort. It seemed easier to her when she left South Africa for the UK (about 18 years ago) as she was in a different stage of her life and did not have to consider studies and children, but could focus on work, her husband and friends. Reality therapy holds that individuals have more control over their thinking and actions than they do their feelings and physiology. As such, a suggestion will be for Courtney not to dwell on her guilty feelings about not making an effort to make good women friends, but actively find solutions to her challenge of meeting like-minded women.
