Kristen Rogers is a journalist and the associate writer for CNN Features. In her article “Gender identity: The difference between gender, sex and other need-to-knows”, she cites multiple professionals stating why gender and sex are different and should be treated as such. She uses ethos, pathos, and logos to target her audience: young teens and adults confused about their identity, or just achieve her goal to educate the younger generation who is more open to change. In this novel, Kent Leslie retells the story of Amanda America Dickson. Dickson background begins to being born as a mulatto, which is a mixture of races. Dickson was born in 1894, where slavery was very prevalent and very profitable and it was very common for masters to sleep with the servants whether a house or field servant regardless of gender. In Dickson case, her father David Dickson was one of the richest plantation owners in Hancock County, but the abnormality of Dickson’s case was that her white father took her in and raised her as if she was apart of the white community. Leslie did an excellent job of exploiting the great aspects of Dickson’s achievements and accolades throughout her life and career.

Many women who choose to neglect their children for men usually live in poor conditions such as when a single mother can’t provide for her family she will find a man who can take care of business within the household, usually when single mothers find men to take care of their families the men tend to be abusive and sometimes sexual to children. A mother’s neglect and unwilling to put the needs of her children before her own can turn into a vicious cycle of abuse and substance abuse to forget what the last family line did to them in the past. Even with all of the facts, both options have negative results It was a highly debated decision made by two parents that was sure to set precedent for future medical practices.
