December 17 in North Carolina, 1989. I was sitting on an old beaten down bench on the North Carolina train station waiting for the train to arrive. It was quarter to six and I had just finished eating my sandwich. I close my eyes for a brief second and was woken by the loud “CHOO CHOO” the train had made when it came to a full stop. I picked up my suitcase filled with clothes, papers and a blank lottery which I bought on the station before boarding the train. It was a momentary decision, and to tell the truth, I was a bit ashamed to buy that ticket as it felt like I was desperate and hoped to attain the attainable. I boarded the train clenching my suitcase and I desperately tried to find a compartment with no people in it. Finally, I found …show more content…
“NO_NAME” the sign at the top of the compartment read. I was confused and decided to step outside to see where we had stopped. When I peered out of the doors that had just opened, I saw a train station I had never before. The station looked a little more modern than all the ones we had been to. After that, I decided to take a stroll around the city to find out what I would do for the next few years as I tried to find a new life for myself. I bought myself a small room in a hotel for the time being as I tried to locate a job. I returned back into the stall where I handed my lottery ticket to and I was dumbfounded to see that the white man in the stall handed me a large briefcase full of money. I stared at him for a second and he simply growled, “Congratulations, you won the lottery”. I was still in shock as I had everything I needed to start up a new life. I had the money. I went back to my hotel and as I changed into my pajamas, I glanced at my old belt I used when I was a sheriff in an old town in North Carolina. It was then when it hit me. I wanted to be a detective. I quickly sent a resume to the nearest police station and luckily for me, they were looking for young and talented detectives as the station was fairly new and needed some
