False! They said my house was not in a flood zone. But then why did my house flood? Hurricane Harvey has made me stronger- not weaker- not powerless. Above all this experience has changed me. It has taught me to be content with what I have. Not to take things for granted. How, then, did I get here? Take notice to how positively- how calmly I can tell you the whole story. The clear window slowly fogged as my warm breath converged with the cold air. My heart began to palpitate due to what I observed outside. I forced myself off the glass only to notice the sweaty imprints my clammy hands left behind. “This is really happening,” I concluded. “Do I genuinely want to know?” I questioned. I slowly turned around and caught my parent’s “deer in the headlights” expressions. The look of pure terror told me what I already knew; our house was going to flood. Minutes on the clock ticked by; nobody in my family moved. It was almost as though by not moving, we thought we could prevent what happened next. The fact was- we couldn’t. Nothing on this Earth could stop the God- made destruction advancing towards our house; all we could do was be prepared. One by one we all came to our senses. My parents would grab one piece of furniture, carry it up the stairs, and then rush back down, only to do it over and over again. Meanwhile, my sister, Sophie, and I did what we could do to assist- absolutely nothing. We knew that by attempting to aid we could only get in their way.
