William watched Tabitha unbutton her blouse. She pulled the blouse over her shoulders to reveal a lacy, white bra. She leaned over, unzipped her gym bag, and retrieved a scrunchie. She stood, slipped the scunchie over her wrist, reached behind her back and snapped open the clasp on her bra. The bra landed with a soft thud on top of the gym bag. Tabitha leaned her head back, pulled her long, black hair off her shoulders, and tied it back in a ponytail with the scrunchie. She lowered her gaze and stared at William. A wry smile curled at the corners of her lips. The suggestions were always just explicit enough to stoke the white-hot jealousy that burned through William’s veins. Tabitha always managed to throw a few hints at William in the moments before he stepped onto the mat to spar with Marc. She enjoyed the added strength that the fit of jealousy stirred in the moments before William threw the first punch during one of Marc’s class demonstrations. William looked up at the clock on his classroom wall. It was past 9 O’clock, still relatively early by Beacon standards, but the students had put in a good night, and William was feeling magnanimous. “Alright, good work tonight. I’ll let you guys pack it up and get out of here early,” William said to the group of juniors. “Really?” One of the students asked. “Yeah, it’s ok, go enjoy your weekend. Consider this a gift for your efforts on the SAT today.” “Wow! Thank you, Mr. Blake,” the students said as they packed their bags and headed for the door. “Be careful out there,” William said. “I read in the New Haven Register that there have been a few muggings in area.” “Yeah, right,” one of the students said playfully. “I’m not worried about you guys, I’m thinking of the muggers,” William said. The students smiled and made their way out of the room. William’s iPhone buzzed with a new text message. The name Mary appeared on the iPhone screen.
