From the 13th to 15th century, liberty, justice, and equality were not very common. During this time the feudal system was already very well established. Kings ruled by divine right which meant they were appointed by God, but in 1215 the barons began to question these rights. The barons rebelled against King John and the Magna Carta soon served as a peace treaty. Many major documents in history have have used the Magna Carta’s ideology and developed them into new sets of laws pertaining to all people.
How did crime and punishment change from 1000-1450? (12 Marks) In this essay I will be explaining how crime and punishment changed over the time period of 1000 to 1450, which inolves many contributing events and factors. These factors will be explored and presented in this essay. The question asked is an open-ended question, and I am aware of the length of an answer a question such as this may merit.
The Middle Ages was a period that lasted from about 500 to 1500(OI). There were kings and queens, nobles, knights, and peasants (Doc. 1). People were treated and respected differently according to their class(OI). There were special relationships and responsibilities that everyone had. In the Middle Ages feudalism affected people’s lives economically, socially, and politically.
First, the Magna Carta is a legal document that was written in 1215. It was written to acknowledge the carelessness of the kings doing in England to abuse his power while watching the other English people suffer, and to enforce a set of rules that everyone, including himself, would have to follow. Dating back to about 1772 BCE the Amorite King Hammurabi issued a set of laws after conquering Mesopotamia, by the name of law codes of Hammurabi ( Hammurabi S2). It was to place boundaries and penalties on people due to their choice of action. Hammurabi did it in order to “cause justice to prevail in the land” and to “further the welfare of the people which supports that idea (Hammurabi S2).
Across the world, various countries impose sentences on criminals for different reasons. Some reasons include to punish offenders, protect the public, change an offender’s behavior, ensure offenders do something to make up for their crime, and to reduce crime in the future. With that being said, the country I chose to have the better sentencing philosophy as opposed to utilizing them all, is England. I chose the English sentencing philosophy because they utilize isolation, deterrence and rehabilitation as a means of condemning their offenders, and by punishing them in proportion to their culpability for criminal activity (Terrill, 2016). During this era, there were also many ferocious means of determining guilt or innocence such as ‘trial by ordeal’ and ‘the judicial duel’. An author's descriptions of space can illuminate more about a story than just the setting and tone. In Crime and Punishment (1866), Fyodor Dostoevsky fills St. Petersburg with richly described buildings, streets, weather, and people which lend to the dark, melancholy tone of the novel and help the reader visualize the setting. As Figes writes, “Petersburg defied the natural order,” its artificiality morphing the Russian people toward a more European way of life. However, “even the Nevsky, the most European of [Tsar Peter’s] avenues, was undone by a ‘Russian’ crookedness,” an organic dent in the armor of the purposefully streamlined, inorganic design of the city.
In both Crime and Punishment and Pride and Prejudice, the reader is afforded a glimpse of the darker side of human nature. Raskolnikov’s shocking coldblooded murder of Alyona Ivanovna, an elderly pawnbroker, and her sister Lizeveta, reflect a degree of brutality almost unimaginable in a human being. Likewise, Miss Caroline Bingley, while certainly not guilty of crimes as grievous or horrific as Raskolnikov’s, betrays a similar sentiment of heartlessness in her treatment of the Bennet sisters throughout the plot of Pride and Prejudice. It began with the fall of the Roman Empire and merged into the Renaissance and the Age of Discovery. The Middle Ages is divided into three main periods, the Dark Ages, the High Middle Ages and the Late Middle Ages. To a significant extent the nature of crime and punishment, it was very different between social classes during the Medieval Period. This can be seen through the significant groups that were involved in medieval crime and punishment, the effects of a person’s social class on crime and punishment and the punishments given out to different social classes between the Medieval Period and today.

My aspiration to become a Mental Health Nurse and to make my career in this discipline has formed out of my own experience of working in the care and education sector, being able help to solve the problems of individuals suffering from a various mental health illnesses. For many years I have worked in schools and institutions for those with mental health conditions, as well as caring for troubled children. This has given me hands on perception of the challenges faced by mental health staff, as well as achieving a great sense of the human satisfaction to be found in caring for such patients by being able to help them to live a more normal life, to achieve some equilibrium in their day-to-day existence and to preserve their self-respect. My ultimate goal is to manage a care home for those who suffer from mental health conditions, but At the same time I am mindful of the variety of roles which could be open to me with a degree in mental health.
