In the present study, Critical Discourse Analysis approach is employed to gauge deeper insights on how the text and visual are used to understanding and interpret textual features, interpersonal system and ideational meaning between the magazines and the readers. According to Van Djik (2006), CDA approach is not limited to the ‘verbal’ approaches to discourse, but also focuses on other semiotic dimensions such as pictures, gestures and etc. of communicative events.

The colour refers to the colour of the text, with usually contrasts with the background colour. It is important because the choice of the colour can help the reader to read the text easier. Kress and Van Leeuwen (2002) states that colour plays an important role because it can make an emotional connection with the readers and comfortable colours are usually chosen as the readers have emotional responses to the texts. Layout can be divided into four sections; top, bottom, left-hand side and right-hand side. The heading is usually placed on the top of the layout and text blocks are placed on the left-hand side or right-hand side. Kress and van Leeuwen (2002) states that the written blocks that are placed on left-hand side are usually less important than those which are placed on the right-hand side because right-hand side will always gain readers’ attention. Salience refers to the size, colour and placement of the text. As mentioned by Kress and van Leeuwen (1996: 212), salience can develop “a hierarchy of importance among the elements, selecting some as more important, more worthy attention than the others.” Framing is another important feature of the magazines text. Writers or publisher will not only consider representational and interpersonal systems, the combination of the both semiotic modes is integrated together to generate a whole meaning, which include headlines, text blocks and the image of the model (Kress and Van Leeuwen, 2006).
Significance of the study
The analysis will show insights on how to construct a front cover for female magazines effectively. By combining text and visuals, an eye-catching magazine front cover can be constructed in various ways to increase the number of readers. As Hijabista is a leading Muslim women 's fashion magazine in Malaysia, this study will also important to the company to maintain their performance and continue their success in the future. The analysis of the text and visual depicted on the magazine’s front cover will provide deeper insight on how to construct and maintain the effective magazine’s front cover. It is important for Hijabista to recognize their distinctive identity and uniqueness compared to other Muslimah fashion magazines.
