Per year coming to Canada, an average of 250,000 persons is immigrating. This norm has been adopted by all parties and has created a multiculturalism society with multicultural values. Added to this, the charter of rights and liberties implemented by M. Pierre Elliot Trudeau in 1982 has contributed to this shift that we are seeing today because, it gave primacy to the rights of every Canadian individuals over the collective security of the public, therefore, encouraging each one to make demands according to their own value system. I went to the event “Critical Dialogues: Diversity and Identity Politics Panel Discussion,” as my co-curricular activity. This event took place on a Tuesday in the afternoon at the student union building. There was a table with the presenters at front and each of them had their own powerpoint or speeches to present. I didn’t know that there were going to be multiple speakers so I thought it was really interesting to see the different points of view from each person.
Amidst the ever-occurring tragedies that now seem to be part of our daily routine lies an ongoing affliction that tends to go unnoticed. Although it has been increasing drastically in the last few decades, substance abuse continues to fly under the radar of the average American citizen. Yet, for many of us, it is an unavoidable sight. As citizens of Seattle, we need to find a way to reach out to those that need our help.
As defined by Merriam Webster, conflict is an argument or disagreement between two parties. In Popular Mechanics by Raymond Carver, Carver creates a scene where the setting is dark and stormy outside, and is also “getting dark on the inside.” A couple in a relationship where the husband is leaving his wife is created, as shown by the wife spitting out words to him such as, “I’m so glad you’re leaving!” to her husband. However, before the husband leaves, he makes one request to his wife; “I want the baby.”

To break the culture of silence surrounding addiction, it is important to create a culture of openness and understanding. This involves acknowledging and addressing the problem of addiction openly and honestly, seeking the necessary resources and support to address the problem, and engaging in open and honest communication with loved ones and community members. I think it is a little of both. Being culturally competent is a process that is lifelong as well as the knowledge you gain by being in the field. Researching and gaining knowledge of the different cultures is something that I consider mandatory. Realistically, there is no way to be 100% multicultural competent because there are so many different cultures around us. This is why studying and learning about different cultures is an ongoing process because there is no end to what we can learn.
Today in Australia, more than 200 languages are spoken, and as much as one fourth of the citizens were born overseas (Australian Bureau of Statistics, 2006&2016). The Australian government believes such cultural diversity has been the feature of Australian society and could be the strength of the nation especially in this rapidly globalizing era. In order to grasp the destruction drug abuse and addiction have on a community, it is best to look at that community’s youth. According to Riley, “Indian youth have the highest rates of alcoholism use disorders of any racial group in the country. . .” (1). This alarming fact only contributes to the notion that many Native American homes have a devastating problem that needs immediate attention. Lowe states in his work that “By twelfth grade, 80% of Native American youth are active drinkers” (2).
A challenge like no Other! A handshake, a tight hug, a gesture like bowing down, a kiss on the cheek, or something quite unique like sticking one’s tongue out at someone are all results of multicultural cities. According to Hutchison (2017), at the beginning of the third millennium, more than half of the global population lives in cities and economic integration as well as globalization fueled what is called cultural diversity and originated what is known now as multicultural cities. Sociology dictionary describes the multi-cultural society/city as “a society characterized by cultural pluralism”; one society rejoices cultural mixtures such as linguistic, religious, ethnical diversities (Encyclopedia.com, 2017). The wealth of multicultural cities poses challenges to the multicultural cities and their citizens.
