The essay will consider the poem 'Practising' by the poet Mary Howe. It will explore how this poem generates its meaning and focus by analysing its techniques, metaphorical construct and its treatment of memory. The poem can primarily be seen to be a poem of missed opportunity. In this way is comes to form, alongside other poems of Howe's a study about a certain kind of loss and the recuperative efforts of memory, alongside the certainty of the failure of this recuperation. The paper will begin by giving a context to the poem with regard to Howe's life and work and will then proceed to analyse it directly, drawing attention to how it can be seen to fulfil this thesis about its content and meaning.
The title already gives insight into the contrasting themes in the poem. It is not clear what the poem is about, but the title tells us that it will be about two contrasting ideas, circles and squares. The speaker seems to be a very intelligent, optimistic young aboriginal girl, who speaks with a knowledgeable voice, and this makes the poem seem like she has understood why everything has happened to her and how it will benefit her in the future. The structure of the poem also relates to the two contrasting themes between the aboriginal people and the white people.
‘For What It’s Worth’ by Buffalo Springfield has a logical message because it is referring to the Sunset Strip Riots that took place in Hollywood during the 1960’s. People protested when they lost their civil rights due to a curfew law that was put into place. The song says, “Stop, children, what’s that sound. Everybody look- what’s going down?”
Poetry Analysis Once the poem “History Lesson” was written numerous poetry foundations celebrated it for many reasons. “History Lesson” not only makes an impact on literature today it has also impacted people also. This poem inspires people and moves them to the point to where they can find a personal connection to the poem itself and to the writer. Not only does it hold emotional value for those who were victimized and those whose family were victimized by the laws of segregation, but the poem is also celebrated for its complexity. The poem uses many techniques to appeal to the reader.
The poem I will be analyzing will be “Uncoiling” by Pat Mora. The theme the author is portraying is the personification of a tornado . It has a dark/fearful/grim tone as she describes the storm that is accruing. The author is using similes, and personification to convey the theme. The very first figurative language used in the poem is personification.
For example, society’s ignorance is displayed when the neighbors express how they would like to “see” (19) the silent listener “again” (19). They realize how the mute auditor’s liveliness has dissolved; however, they do not comprehend how they were the cause of this fatality. Additionally, the speaker mentions how they aspire to “secretly” (20) and “suddenly” (21) meet the silent listener. The alliteration promotes the struggle present in communicating with someone with a lost identity, as it can be difficult to gain a sense of trust after drastic events. Moreover, imagery through the word choice of “long, lonely avenue of elms” (22) is present in the longest verse of the poem.

Baylie Reisch Katherine Usik ENC 1102 3 February 2023 Text Analysis of the Themes within “How to Write a Poem in a Time of War” In “How to Write a Poem in a Time of War,” Joy Harjo shares a story about a community that is torn apart by the impending war. The story begins by setting the scene as the community realizes that the war has arrived; their worst fears have come true. The soldiers took whatever they wanted and destroyed the rest. Unfortunately, the poem seems to indicate that the people of the region never expected this to happen; there is sort of a state of oblivion in the scene (Harjo lines 25-27).
“Poetry Is Not a Luxury” (1982) intertwines feminism and poetry together. Author Audre Lorde says that for women, “poetry is not a luxury, but a necessity of our existence” (Lorde, 1982, pg. 281). In today’s society, women’s opinions aren’t really expressed, because it’s not widely accepted in this man-built world. Lorde’s quote “poetry is not a luxury, but a necessity of our existence” means that women should use their voices and channel their energy into poetry. Since poetry is accepted, women aren’t being deviant.
The poem A Step Away From Them by Frank O’Hara has five stanzas written in a free verse format with no distinguishable rhyme scheme or meter. The poem uses the following asymmetrical line structure “14-10-9-13-3” while using poetic devices such as enjambment, imagery, and allusion to create each stanza. A Step Away From Them occurs in one place, New York City. We know this because of the lines, “On/ to Times Square, / where the sign/blows smoke over my head” (13-14) and “the Manhattan Storage Warehouse.”

“A Memory of Youth”: Yeats and Erotic Experience A cloud blown from the cut-throat north Suddenly hid Love’s moon away. The “cloud”—amorphous and obstructing—cuts into the scene, as well as the poem, with a sudden violence, in order to block the image of “Love’s moon”. The cloud itself cannot have definite dimensions, as it exists to only hide the moon, casting the speaker of the poem, his love and the cloud itself in a continuous darkness. It is in this darkness that the speaker of the poem finds his own perception and experiences clouded, indicating his blind submission to erotic love in lieu of a more illuminating, comprehensive “Love”.
Modern poetry is in open form and free verse. It is pessimistic in tone, portraying loss in faith and psychological struggle which is quite different from the fixed forms and meters of traditional poetry. Secondly, modern poetry is fragmented in nature, containing juxtaposition, inter-textuality and allusion. It has no proper beginning, middle or end. Thirdly, modern poetry is predominantly intellectual in its appeal, rather than emotive.
