Interpreting Business News
On the first sunday of the school year, I was tasked with writing a blog on business ethics. Initially, I viewed the assignment solely as work I had to do, and I finished without much excitement. As time passed I realized I’d be required to write a blog regularly on any business news which interested me. I began to regularly check the news and think critically about it, at the dinner table with my family I’d discuss with my father and brothers current topics like how Netflix is over 20 billion dollars in debt and how a new fleet of shared enclosed electric bicycles would debut in UBC. I became informed about the current business world and that was a great feeling, being able to discuss these occurrences with great knowledge. Blogs went from being a menial task to an opportunity to investigate things which fascinated me. Since my final blog post, I often notice interesting business news and think to myself “I can write my blog on this!” and remember that it was no longer required of me. These tools proved to be incredibly valuable when analyzing, evaluating and identifying the strengths and weaknesses within a business. For me, the business model canvas was the most essential tool to learn. It taught me the importance of breaking down a business into categories, and showed how interconnected the aspects are. The tools we used can take a complex business or industry and break it down in a simple, easy to digest format. Early on, I saw that the tools were a great way to consult or improve a company, and in class 16 I learned that these tools are also useful when investing.
