Throughout the course of the year in Lit/Writing I have grown as a writer as I have learned how to write clear and concise thesis statements and select relevant evidence. One way in which my writing has improved is through the conciseness and clearness of my thesis statements, as I now incorporate more detail into my thesis, while keeping it unambiguous. In the short story summative assessment for “The Scarlet Ibis,” my thesis statement lacks a lot of information. It goes as follows, “In the short story ‘The Scarlet Ibis,’ James Hurst uses indirect characterization through the narrator to show that pride can override and take over one’s conscience.”
Finally my grammar has improved constantly throughout the course. I was able to see my mistakes and how to fix them when I was able to read my grader’s notes. Altering each of my common mistakes helped me understand how to write with correct grammar. The feedback I would get from the instructors helped to improve my rhetorical analysis paper. I learned to ask for assistance when I encountered a problem.
AP English and Dual Enrollment Government have prepared me the most for college. My AP English teacher opened my eyes to different types of literature and sources that is constantly referenced in my first college classes at Tidewater Community College. for example, Karl Marx is quoted a lot in the many theories of sociology. My Dual Enrollment Government course prepared me for this ample amount of reading in college. My professor would provide my class with multiple reading assignments to push our reading limits.
I learned how to formulate a restricted, unified, and precise thesis statement. I am now able to organize essay content into introduction, body and conclusion paragraphs. I also learned how to construct and organize unified, coherent, and well-developed paragraphs. I am able to apply grammar and usage rules correctly and develop clear, concise sentences. I learned about parallelism, run-on, comma splices and sentences.
As a former AP Lang student, I feel that this class has been very beneficial for me in that it has allowed me to apply the techniques and strategies I learned last year toward more relevant subjects. Having the freedom of choosing topics to write about for our various essays made this class more enjoyable than the other English classes that I have taken. AP Lang focused heavily on the techniques of writing solid essays, but instead of writing about useful topics, we analyzed the short stories provided on the exams. Writing a personal narrative essay was very helpful in my college application process and allowed me to employ the same kind of strategies that I learned in class into my college essays.
Blogs went from being a menial task to an opportunity to investigate things which fascinated me. Since my final blog post, I often notice interesting business news and think to myself “I can write my blog on this!” and remember that it was no longer required of me. Interpreting and critically thinking
The Process of Reflection The process of reflection is central to clinical supervision. Launer (2003) describes external and internal factors in supervision whereby clinical practice and sharing skills are external and reflection is an ‘internal conversation.’ Brunero & Stein-Parbury (2008) discussed the effects of clinical supervision in nursing staff and argued that self-reflection generates a sense of self-awareness and knowledge to the individual. Supervisees or students may be asked what happened during a clinical event, how they felt, the implications of their actions and what they would do differently if faced with the same situation.
Throughout the class, I have learned that my writing has grown greatly and what undercover talents I think I have within writing skills. In classes previously to Composition One, I have gotten very good grades on papers and the classes came very easily to me. Although, Composition One has showed me that I’m not a perfect writer and I still have many things to work on to get to the level that I would like to be at. One goal that Composition One helped me learn was how to demonstrate effective writing as a recursive process.
With my written essays, I simply revised the essays as I wrote. So, I assert that this course has helped me learn to manage my writing efforts a bit
The following reflection piece is based on an event which I experienced during my internship placement. Johns model of reflection will be used for this assignment. The reflection is based around my own personal experience with a terminally ill patient. It focuses on one main issue, providing hope for patients and how I felt about it. it also discusses my feelings, the knowledge I had, my knowledge gaps and what I learnt through literature during my reflection.
While I do know some of the rules, due to my previous English teachers in school, there is still much that I do not know. But, through the course of this past semester I have learned a great deal about different and new rules. This class has taught me a great deal about writing and how to correctly write an essay. Writing is a system of many rules and is a way for people to express their creativity. This class has given me much room to express myself creatively and gain more knowledge.
My Writing Experience In previous courses, my writing skills have been mediocre or just enough to pass the class. Throughout the duration of this course, I have written a variety of papers using different techniques and skills. Previously I would write assuming that the only audience would be my instructor. This course has helped me realize that there are many steps and skills involved with writing a well-organized and easy to comprehend essay.
The art of argument persuasion I’ve learned in this course is so beneficial for my marketing major. Other than that, it made me develop the essay writing skills necessary for success in my studies at the university level. This English course also taught me how powerful written words can be, and how the delivery of the tone is important for the reader. The tone of a narrative is different than the tone of a research, where the difference makes the paper. Also, the power in written words tells how much it is crucial to mankind.
