Throughout the course of the year in Lit/Writing I have grown as a writer as I have learned how to write clear and concise thesis statements and select relevant evidence. One way in which my writing has improved is through the conciseness and clearness of my thesis statements, as I now incorporate more detail into my thesis, while keeping it unambiguous. In the short story summative assessment for “The Scarlet Ibis,” my thesis statement lacks a lot of information. It goes as follows, “In the short story ‘The Scarlet Ibis,’ James Hurst uses indirect characterization through the narrator to show that pride can override and take over one’s conscience.” In the thesis statement, I should have explained the implications of “pride overriding one’s …show more content…
In “The Scarlet Ibis” I solely picked evidence that mentioned the word “pride.” The quote is, “‘I did it for myself: that pride.’” While picking evidence for my paper I did not think about whether it would be easy or not to elaborate on. I blindly picked it because of one word, “pride.” Though the quote has the word “pride,” it has no relevance, since the point I am trying to make in my paper is that too much “pride” makes you perform bad deeds. The “it” the narrator is referring to is him helping his younger brother learn how to walk. This is undeniably an act of generosity and I try to label it as a bad deed, which is illogical. The essay regarding To Kill A Mockingbird best exemplifies my growth in selecting relevant evidence. One of the quotes from my essay is, “‘Mockingbirds don’t do one thing, but make music for us to enjoy. They don’t eat up people’s gardens, don’t nest in corncribs, they don’t do one thing but sing their hearts out for us. That’s why it’s a sin to kill a mockingbird.’” This quote effortlessly allows me to elaborate on how a specific character is a symbol of a “mockingbird.” The point I am making with this quote is that a “mockingbird” symbolizes a character. This quote demonstrates the traits “mockingbirds” possess, as it describes the behaviour and actions of “mockingbirds” through statements such as, “they don’t do one thing but sing their hearts out for us.” With this information, it is easy to link the traits and behaviour of a “mockingbird” with the traits and behaviour from a character in the novel to demonstrate how a “mockingbird” symbolizes that character. My selection of evidence has predominantly improved through finding only parts of the novel relevant to my thesis, as I make sure the quote will be easy to
