Effective decisions, “a timely decision that meets a desired objective and is acceptable to those individuals affected by it” (Nelson & Quick, 2015, p. 154). Those types of decisions are created by a strong leader. For when it comes to decisions, situations, and events a leader must be able to act quickly on his or her feet. This is because their actions, words, and decisions will affect many. With leader, they also have different roles and from the video “The Cuban Missile Crisis: A Case Study in Decision Making and its Consequences” shows the role President John F. Kennedy had during this event. To begin in October 1962, evidence had revealed that there were Soviet Union Missiles in Cuba. With this discovery, President John F. Kennedy quickly assembled a small group which would be known as Executive Committee of the National Security Council, or also known as ExComm (Films on Demand, 1999). It is mentioned in the video that, “the most important thing that a leader can do, before a group, even begins, is to design properly” (Films on Demand, 1999, 5:20). That is was President Kennedy did, he planned with who he wanted in the group and why. For the men he chose, he knew would thing about every possible idea as well as the events that could come from the idea. Kennedy roles were like any leader, “only to intervene, to set strategy, or redirect the group during the process” (Films on Demands, 1999, 5:35). But another important factor that President Kennedy created was the open and trusting atmosphere, for without that the member in that group wouldn’t have discussed as freely and openly as they did.
