The Role of Caudillos in Latin America

The term Caudillo is somewhat elusive due to the overwhelming variances in human nature. What exactly do I mean by this? The term is used to define human beings and in general definitions are a generalization of what things are. However when we begin to attempt to define different individual people the task becomes much more challenging. For this body of work the term Caudillo will be loosely defined as a person male in gender usually with strong masculine qualities. Who also has proved themselves perhaps in battle or is incredibly persuasive with speech, which allows a rise to the top of the political ladder. He was a Unitarian but sided with federalist and also served as the governor of La Rioja. He was highly respected in many circles and relied upon to swage political movement one way or another. Another prime example would be Martín Miguel de Güemes Who served in the military and fought for Argentina in the war for independence. Both of these men played important roles in their individual corners of the world. Yet al the while there were not directly heads of a major state. However the power and influence of these caudillos was far reaching and comprehensive. Dotted with many bloody conflicts and civic turmoil the nineteenth century tested the political waters for what would become the future of most of Latin American Nations of today. The Caudillos served an important role in history and have enabled us to learn vital lessons for the roles of government. I personally believe that this movement away from strong individual rulers and towards a more representative theme in government has certainly been for the best and was a long time coming. Having said this however the Caudillos were a vital portion of the government even up to the mid twentieth century and they should be remembered.
