The Holy Ghost People by Peter Adair, was created in 1967. It exposes people of the Pentecostal religion, and their unusual rituals and ceremonies that they partake in. While watching the movie I kept on wondering why someone would want to sit through one of their services and participate in such odd rituals and behaviors. After reviewing the sociological theories we have learned in class, I concluded that Durkheim’s Social Consensus theory and Collins Interaction Ritual Chains theory both best explain the motivations for joining and staying in a religion that has such unusual rituals and extreme commitments.
The Rape of Nanking is organized into three parts. Part one consists of the three perspectives of the massacre: The Chinese, Japanese, and the westerners that stayed and helped during the slaughter. Part two concerns what happened after the war with survivors and the Japanese government. Finally, part three tells of the ways the event has been put in the background and mostly unspoken of. The way Chang sets up the book makes understanding the massacre easy for the reader.
The novel also shows what many families go through on there journey to there destination, it shows the heartbreak that they face and the items that are left behind. This is well illustrated in the novel when Suyuan was on the walk escaping the Japanese the piles of family heirlooms left behind on the path such as when "She left the suitcases behind, keeping only the food and a few clothes. And later she also dropped the bags of wheat flour and rice". (Tan, 239) The novel also illustrated how many people were lying at the side of the pathway due to the fact that they had given up on there escape. The novel also illustrated how Suyuan had begun to become worn down from the escape and began to show visible scars such as "Her shoulders ached from
“Love and Honor and Pity and Pride and Compassion and Sacrifice” Nam Le’s “Love and Honor and Pity and Pride and Compassion and Sacrifice” is categorized in “ethnic story” narrated his Vietnamese life in order to meet an upcoming deadline even though finally he can’t submit his story because his father burns his work. Throughout the story, Nam the narrator talks about “the past” which he experiences when he was young including the recent experience that he has got from his father reunion. Not only does the story tell us about the past which, but it also shows a connection of time between past, present, and future. Likewise, the story shows the relationship between son and father which is the main theme of this story; and shows how the past is important and affect to them differently. Also, the story of the past could lead to the end of the story that can be interpreted like a prediction of the direction of their relationship in the future.
In his novel Slaughterhouse Five, Kurt Vonnegut illustrates the life of Billy Pilgrim as he is unstuck in time in order to ask, “What is the point and validity of Christianity if it only leads to pain and suffering?”, to which he answers that there is no point or validity to it through his emphasis on violence and cruelty in Christianity, juxtaposition with Tralfamadorian beliefs, and satire and mockery of Christian values. Using cruel, violent imagery ironically indicative of Christianity, Vonnegut emphasizes the pain and suffering of the religion’s figurehead and ultimately the hopelessness it leaves its followers. Billy was taunted by a picture of “an extremely gruesome crucifix” his mother hung over his childhood bed even though “Billy
Understanding and knowledge of one another is essential yet frustrating when a barrier exists. In Amy Tan’s Joy Luck Club, she portrays the story of four mothers and daughters using their points of view. One mother-daughter pair is Jing-mei and Suyuan Woo. When Suyuan dies, Jing-mei has to try and fill her place in the Joy Luck Club that includes Suyuan’s friends: An-mei Hsu, Lindo Jong, and Ying-ying St. Clair. Amy Tan uses characterization to point out the character’s pride, lack of understanding, and resentment in order to illuminate the heritage lost between Jing-mei and Suyuan Woo.
Loung implements distinct chapter titles, symbolism, and imagery to reflect her pain, hope, and mournful mood to the reader. Loung’s distinct use of chapter titles throughout the memoir helps to convey the suffering she faced while under Khemer Rouge rule. Each of Loung’s chapter titles are short and brief, which creates a sense of curiosity in the reader since they do not understand the underlying meaning of the title. The titles reflect an incident that occurred in the chapter and are used to remind the reader of the hardships and sacrifice her family endured. For example, when first reading the chapter title “The Last Gathering”(Ung 151), the reader is confused and curious, because he does not understand the meaning of the title, and is
Death, an important aspect of humanity, also a major theme in Han Kang’s novel Human Acts, brings the question of what happens in the afterlife. In the chapter “The Boy’s Friend,” the author provides a unique perspective of death as it is written from the point of view of the main character’s best friend, Jeong-Dae, who was killed during the Gwangju uprisings. However, the narration by Jeong-Dae is unique because it reveals his experiences as a soul still connected to its body. The unique narration allows the readers to understand his perspective and thoughts as a lost soul and the horrid experiences when he was alive and now in death. In Han Kang’s novel, Human Acts, the voices of these connected souls are used to humanize their experiences
The historical fiction novel Johnny Got His Gun, written by Dalton Trumbo, presents an anti-war theme in an effective manner through the usage of literary devices. Trumbo incorporates loaded language, stream of consciousness, and symbolism in his writing in order to develop a sound argument and to convince the readers of his views. Through his persuasive wording and rhetoric techniques, Trumbo captures the emotional vulnerability of his audience and accurately depicts the absurdity of war as well as the harsh consequences that follow. Throughout the novel, Dalton Trumbo successfully instills his pacifist beliefs through a plethora of loaded language.
Don’t Judge A Book By Its Cover Most of the time people judge the appearance of an object or person before really getting to know and see what is underneath the surface. Society now has become extremely inattentive. It is very easy to fall into a trap of looking at only the surface of a person or thing and not taking the time to look deeper into it. Thats where the metaphor “Don’t judge a book by its cover” comes from.
Vestal Virgins: Commitment To The Fullest Vestal Virgins were perceived and viewed as an ultimately central organization and Roman’s very survival depended on the chastity and legality of the Vestal Virgins who were considered more significant than all of the female cults and priestesses in the Roman society. The Cult of Vesta was formed in 715 B.C. by King Numa Pompilius who was the most religious of Rome’s seven kings and managed to withstand the Cult of Vesta over thousand of years. The main reason behind forming the Vestal Virgin groups was for the protection and a secure strategy in Rome which was a warlike national so the idea of Vestal Virgin was used for the main purpose of protecting the survival and safety of the Roman interior
The short stories of Ted Chiang are written in a way such that the overarching structure help to give a deeper meaning to the stories. The rationale for why Chiang writes in this way is to help vary his writing style and help give the story more meaning without writing more words. Ted Chiang manipulates the structure of one of his works, “Story of Your Life,” for the purpose of augmenting the meaning the story and its underlying themes, while also using it to build a stronger relationship to the audience. In “Story of Your Life,” the way the Chiang breaks up the story is a result of mimicking the main character’s way of cognition.
The characters and themes As an addiction to the original text, I have created insight into Shoba’s thoughts and feeling during the months following her heart wrenching miscarriage. I have Included both protagonists from the original texts (Shoba and Shukumar) and looked into the themes of darkness, communication and games. I have associated these themes very strongly with each other in the way that most of the couples communicating happens during the blackout through a game. (reality and relationship theme) I have explored the darkness theme by giving detailed information on Shoba’s thoughts about the couples communication during the blackouts and her decision to turn on the light when she tells Shukumar she’s leaving which continues into
The horrors of the war are reflected throughout the novel, but Ninh uses the landscape of the Central Highlands to reflect on Kien, and how the war affects him. There are sharp and horrific descriptions of the Jungle of Screaming Souls, where effective language conveys images of Kien’s suffering and the overwhelming power that it has on Kien’s mental state. Ninh also uses strong images and juxtaposition to reflect on his image of his hometown, and how that image has changed after the war, where the reader interprets people’s horrible suffering in poverty. The relationship between the violence and the natural landscape also conveys the traumatic environment that soldiers had to cope with, to the reader, using grim language to describe both the landscape and the violence.
Trauma In the novel Mornings in Jenin, there is an astounding amount of trauma that occurs both to the characters of the story and land that they live on. This includes the loss of the land on which these people lived, and it also included the trauma of losing the ones that they loved. An indescribable amount of people were affected by the trauma that occurred and that is shown through the different characters of the novel.
