The cults are some of the most mysterious and secretive groups in America. While looking from the perspective of a member of the american society, cults seem like a safe and comforting space for new members. Yet, when looked at closer, most cults are dangerous and intimidating to our nation’s health and safety. While there are few cults where their ideals and lifestyle is very safe and nurturing,albeit strange to the public, there are too few and in between where their motives and practices are dangerous to society and the members in the cults. Because most cults are very secretive, it is almost impossible to perceive what goes on in cults. The only knowledge known from cult activities are from ex-members, who have come forth with this information, or from police raids and news broadcast. These activities can range from harmless acts such as preaching their gospel in the Mormon faith, to being dangerous and downright destructive, like in the cult of The People’s Temple and Heaven’s Gate, both of which allowed the mass suicide of hundreds of members. One cult that harmed thousands of Americans was The Branch Davidians Cult, specifically a sub-branch led by Florence Houteff. Believing April,22,1959 to be the day God clears out the Jews and Arabs from Palestine, and the second coming of Christ, thousands of believers sold all their possessions and gave all their money to the church to witness this event on top of Mt. Carmel, their base of operations. Sadly, their dreams soon faded as April 22 passed and none of the events prophesied happened. Because of this failed prophecy thousands of people either left the cult, or joined another branch. This situation was very devastating to many. Because of these people’s deep faith in their religion, it cost the members everything they had, and led to thousands becoming homeless, or on the brink of becoming homeless and living on the street. From the cults of the early 20th century to those now, they have provided the world with more chaos and destruction than help. The leaders of these cults are corrupt and justify the cruel things they do with their own crazy beliefs, even if outsiders don’t see it. Most americans see that these leaders are in the wrong and are doing terrible things to our nation. Even those who were in the cults can testify that what they have lived was a life of misfortune and terribleness.
