The solution to overcoming this barrier would be cultural competence training. Cultural competence training has shown great promise at improving the knowledge, attitudes, and skills of health professionals when it comes to working with diverse populations (Mareno, 2014). I find that it would be good for every organization to establish a generalized diversity training for all staff to take. This training could discuss that its okay to ask a patient about their cultural and how we as a care provider could better meet their needs. This training could also discuss the topic of being self-aware.
I am truly touched by your story. You demonstrated the therapeutic use of yourself and applied cultural competency in the caring process. I can say that the ability to deliver nursing care that allows effective interaction and communication from diverse cultures, races, and ethnic backgrounds is cultural competency at its best.
For me, cultural competence is all about understanding the culture, belief and value of other people and your own. It is how we deal with our own and other people’s conviction. For one’s self, it is being culturally aware of how the world works and how each culture is different from each other. It is acquiring knowledge of other people’s customs and achieving cultural skills to share to everyone. It is our willingness to value other people’s way of life and accepting them openly.
With dramatic changes in the healthcare system, but most importantly, in the nursing field, cultural competence is an important affiliation to the current and future nursing practice. With that, two personal strengths can come from understanding cultural competence. One strength of cultural competence seen at my facility is the potential to understand other cultures, including their values and beliefs, as well as their distinctions in medical treatments. Furthermore, the second strength is the experience acquired through the interactions between other cultures, making the nurse extra competent in the field of culture.
Did you know that I appreciate your positive attitude and that reflects during class on how you approach other class mates and how you relate to their experiences. In regards of your post here I agree that Cultural Competencies are a set of beliefs that needs to be taught and passed on from an early age and preferable long before people are taking courses that relate to Human Services and working with different populations. While class room and work experiences are a great start I question if it is enough when a worker in this field goes home after 8 hours and relapses back into her or his own cultural experiences. While some of us experience other diversities and cultures during our practicum site it might also be effective to eat and sleep
The lack of cultural competency by physicians in health care settings is producing many barriers to health care that is negatively affecting Hispanic families, such as miscommunications, poor adherence to medications and health promotion strategies, and misunderstandings that lead to misdiagnosis or inadequate treatment for Hispanics. This issue is alarming because the Hispanic population makes up roughly 17% of the entire U.S. population, which is a staggering figure that can’t be ignored. Some solutions that have been tried in the past but failed include, establishing more community-based programs to assist this segment of the population, hospitals pushing for prevention programs, and greater efforts by health institutions on training physicians to improve all aspects of communication. After taking the self-assessment survey for quality and culture, I would like to improve and understand how cultural competence can have a real impact on clinical outcomes. Taking from some of the questions I answered wrong, it make me wants to be cultural competent. There are a few questions I am surprised and shocked, that I answered them incorrectly. I do understand that with training, I will start to gain cultural competence but it will take consistent individual practice on my part to develop and maintain individual cultural competence. The world is a diverse population, with people coming from various ethnic and cultural backgrounds. A person’s views, values, and traditions determine their daily needs and practices. So, healthcare providers face certain challenges and restrictions because a patient’s belief may inhibit professionals from providing the most effective care. Cultural competence is a process of understanding various beliefs, values, practices, and behaviors of a cultural groups particularly the ones that is different than our own (Potter & Perry 2013, p). In order to be culturally competent one has to be free of prejudice that is, having an opinion, mostly unfavorable, towards a group of people without any knowledge about them.
