To begin with, one’s cultural identity is formed through their beliefs. Depending on where you live and what is popular around you can affect how you view the world. In the text, Two Kinds, written by Amy Tan it states, “America was where all my mother's hopes lay. She had come to San Francisco in 1949 after losing everything in China”. This quote shows that how her mother had all of her hopes and dreams filled in one placed that she wishes her daughter would soon be apart of. They believed that in America they could be and do anything they wanted to, and shortly that is what they set their dreams to be. Secondly, another major part in someone’s cultural identity is through their environment. For many people, the environment surrounding them effects on how they view others. Santha Ramu Ran stated in her text, By Any Other Name, “She said it was because Indians cheat.” Premila added. “So I don’t think we should go back to that school”.
