Different social, professional and cultural context may effect relationships and the way people communicate because of lack of understanding into one another’s back ground, religion and culture. social status is an indicator of credibility and legitimacy, and this is seriously effects how one communicates with other. Key elements that are involved in an audience's evaluation include title, reputation, and the extent to which people can identify with the communicator's motives and objectives. Culture affects how one views others and the world around them in a large way as shown by past experiences, heritage, and family. Family affects our culture because the people we spend our life with have such a large impact on the way we act. Moreover our past experiences affect us by learning from what we and others do and the result. Things one has experienced in the past greatly affects how one views the world. This is clearly shown in Robert Lake’s(Medicine Grizzlybear’s) essay, “An Indian Father’s Plea.”
One major problem I have encounter with the Hispanic population is how they distrust their medical provider if the provider is of a different race and does not speak their language and/or understand their culture. A large number of the patient’s we see only speaks Spanish and are from low socioeconomic status, some with little reading and writing comprehension. To complicated the situation they do not share with the medical staff or physician that they cannot read or write. Not being able to communicate makes it difficult to assess pain level; it can lead to the patient taking the medication incorrectly, and makes its difficult to build a relation with the physician. The concern for millennial circumstances has recently been addressed in many articles published across the nation. Two prime examples of these articles would be “I’m a Millennial and My Generation Sucks” by Johnny Oleksinski and “Are Millennials the Screwed Generation?” by Joel Kotkin. Authors such as these draw attention to the millennial generation because they now make up the majority of the population and will soon be in control. Despite their differing views, both authors explain the behaviour of millennials as well as what is expected of their futures.
Analysis Something I believe this article did very well was explaining and testing cultural differences in some races. If this article had grouped all men together and ignored the details that would affect their cultural background, the study would have gotten results that wouldn’t have been correct. First thing that I had to do for this paper was read chapter two from the textbook Among Cultures. In this chapter there were eight very short quizzes to do. I had to do this for each of the eight world views. This chapter helped sum up different styles and ways of communication. It was very interesting to actually see what my scores where vs the American scores.
The reader is told these very general descriptions of who was chosen to participate in the study but both descriptions could be very opinionated. I could think that someone was doing well, but the researchers might not think the same as me. There should have been some more specific specifications on who was chosen. Later they reveal the results of the peoples lives, but again are not very specific. The closest thing to numbers they give are, “some” (O’connor 2), or, “others” (O’connor 2).
Both of the supplied texts address issues of interpersonal perception. The first paragraph assumes that cultural norms provide an important bridge by which relationships are formed in society. This bridge 's effectiveness is sometimes diminished by a lack of understanding between generations. Some habits of the younger generation have become so ingrained in them that they don 't even realize that older individuals may perceive them as insulting or inconsiderate.
I have over heard people talking to elders in a patronizing and condescending tone of voice. I possibly have been guilty of this tone as well, not meaning to appear that way. No one, any age group deserves the condensing tone to be used in conversation. It is disrespectful and humiliating. According to the CPA Model, (The Communication Predicament of Aging Model, "takes the idea of over accommodation and extends it into a broader picture of the causes and consequences of bad intergenerational communication (Hummert, Garstka, Ryan, & Bonnesen, 2004; Ryan, Giles, Bartolucci, & Henwood, 1986)."
Cultural identity. The identity or feeling of belonging to a group, it is part of a person’s self-conception and self perception and is related with nationality, ethnicity, religion, social class, generation, locality or any kind of social group that has its own distinct culture. Cultural identity also relates to ethnic identity, which entails an awareness of one’s membership in a social group that has a common culture. Many people have a different outlook on cultures and the effect it has on people, some people are influenced by it a lot more than others are. With some people they have something or do something on a daily basis that represents who they are and where they're from.
Generation gap and heritage In the short story “Everyday Use”, Alice Walker has tried to show us the gap between our generations and the importance of our heritage. The story focuses on a small family consists of Mama, sister Maggie, and sister Dee. They all grew up together in the same house and was raised by their mother who was the father and the mother for them. There are conflicts and struggles that clearly shows the gap between different generations, the importance of our heritage, and the educational status.

Cultural identity plays a very vital role in cross cultural communication, people from a particular culture communicate with partners and employees from many different cultures and in this situation every individual strives to keep their cultural and individual identity. According to Gardiner and Kosmitzki, identity is defined as “a person 's self-definition as a separate and distinct individual, including behaviours, beliefs, and attitudes” (Gardiner & Kosmitzki, 2008, p. 154). Also, Ting-Toomey defines identity as a "reflective self-conception or self-image that we each derive from our family, gender, cultural, ethnic, and individual socialization process"( Ting-Toomey, 2005). With the expanding of organizations in the world and working internationally the needs of understanding other cultures and new ways of dealing with others become a key aspect of competitive advantages for any organization.
