Chapter Two From The Textbook Among Cultures

First thing that I had to do for this paper was read chapter two from the textbook Among Cultures. In this chapter there were eight very short quizzes to do. I had to do this for each of the eight world views. This chapter helped sum up different styles and ways of communication. It was very interesting to actually see what my scores where vs the American scores. For the first one it was over individualism/collectivism. For this quiz I scored 24 points out of the 30 that you could get. These results told me that I scored where most Americans would. I saw this as telling me that I think of others and am seen to fit the collectivism side. Yet for the first answer I was the total opposite and I think that is because I am very family orientated. …show more content…

On page 36 the book describes achievement as a lack of respect for the unearned status (Hall,2005). Ascription is someone born into wealth or have been given something in life. Achievement is where people have to work hard in life to get to their goal. Their goals are determined by how hard they work in life. For this quiz I got a total of 14 out of 30. Also Americans tend to score in the 17 or lower rang. So this tells me that I score with the American group. I feel that this is the case because of how I was raised. I was not raised into a high social class family and never really had anything given to me. Even in sports to get to state in wrestling I had to put forth more effort and hard work to get to where I was. I am a strong Christian and I feel that has a lot to base on how I look at life. I believe that everyone is born with evil in them. This is because we naturally sin because in Genesis 3:6 Eve ate from the tree of knowledge when God told Adam and eve not too. I also think in life that we have to work to get things in life and things are not just given to us. I feel that this came from the way my family raised me and how I worked hard in life for things. Granted people are born into wealth and better life styles that shouldn’t stop me from working hard to get what I want in life.
