The character of humanities

The humanities have existed since people have been able to think, communicate and record their thoughts. Societies have used music, literature, philosophy and many more types of expression to fathom the world they lived in. Throughout the development of the humanities, several characteristics have developed to set it aside from its partners, social sciences and sciences. In The Three Cultures, Kagan states that the three departments vary in nine different dimensions, therefore giving each department a set of nine characteristics. There is not an obvious similarity between this and the characteristic that springs to mind. However, the second hypothesizes stand out. According to Lie, there was a male-oriented perspective on women’s physiology and sexuality and the case of Christine de Pizan, the first female to learn Latin, illustrates the importance of a gendered approach in studying the transmission of knowledge and the process of vernacularization. This shows that the primary interest of Lie’s research had to do with human understanding, namely the male understanding of female physiology and how that changed due to Pizan. The second characteristic is the primary sources of evidence and control of conditions. Kagan states that most humanists use written texts and human behaviors gathered under conditions of minimal control.
