The Iliad by Homer, the Odyssey poem written by Homer and the Prometheus mythology are classical texts that reflect the historical and cultural background of the Greek and Roman literary skills. The Odyssey and the Iliad are Homer’s epic poems that portray Greek and Western culture. The three texts give an insight of the ancient Roman myths, culture and the literature during both the 17th and 18th century. The two texts by Homer and the Prometheus mythology represent a classical period that consisted of the cultural history and the civilization of the Romans and Greece hence known as the Greece-Roman World. In the story, we can see that Prometheus knew how to steal fire from Hephaestus’s forge. He was wise since he was able to collaborate with Zeus so that he could avoid punishment together with other titans. He is also seen as a wise man since he could warn his brother not to accept gifts from the gods during the Pandora’s Box legend. He knew Zeus would be angry. Also, Prometheus was a pillar of hope to the Greek revolutionaries. He becomes violent and angry because of Zeus punishment, and he decided to steal fire back fire for humans. “I did the wrong thing intentionally, intentionally; I won't deny it: by helping mortals, I brought trouble on myself. But I certainly never thought I would have a punishment anything like this, left to wither on these elevated rocks ” (Griffith).
The Iliad and the Odyssey, however, vary in chronological setting. The Odyssey shows Odysseus’s ten year struggle to return home after the Trojan War. This was when Odysseus fights the mystical creatures while facing the wrath of the gods. During this time, Penelope and Telemachus drive away suitors hence waiting for Odysseus to return. Later odyssey slaughters the suitors vying for Penelope and takes Ithaca’s throne. The Iliad is set during the period of the ten-year-old Trojan War.
