Cummins is a very well-known company. The company was built on the idea of the diesel engine. Many different trucks and some cars are using diesel engines in this day and age. Some of the vehicles using the diesel engine are the Ram trucks, Chevrolet 2500 HD, Chevrolet 3500 HD, Ford F-250, and the Ford F-350.
The Cummins brand was made by Clessie Lyle Cummins. Clessie designed his first engine at eleven years old. The first engine he designed was a steam engine. He designed the engine in Indiana. Clessie then was asked to help on a pit crew for Ray Harroun. With the help of Clessie, Ray won the first ever Indianapolis 500. Clessie gave the team ideas on how to make the racecar faster. They offer engines for some of the major agriculture dealers. They also offer engines to construction, mining, oil and gas fields, and the rail system. Agriculture uses Cummins engines because they can be transplanted into the equipment with ease. They also offer better horsepower ratings, which is a bonus for the agriculture scene. With all the new technology coming out with farming, the implement being used are getting larger and more advanced. Planting and harvesting season can make an engine work very hard for long hours and the Cummins engine is capable of handling that abuse with very minimal down time. Some construction equipment manufactures went with the Cummins engine due to the size and torque rating. For example, dozers need to be able to push a lot of dirt at a time, Cummins engine can offer the torque needed to push that dirt. Construction work is not fast paced work.
