DAMA Community Observation Report

In the art world, at has had the opportunity to influence communities, change perspectives, and reflect the perspectives of others. Regarding public art, art organizations are often part of the art making process and hired for commissions. To create successful works pf public art, art organizations need volunteers and an attentive audience to provide the art with life. This semester I worked with the art organization DAMA, or Dane Arts Mural Arts, which is a nonprofit group that creates murals and other forms of art throughout Dane County. DAMA is part of a community art program that works to train local artists to create murals that bring people together, beautify neighborhoods, and make a difference in the lives of community members.

It is up to the artists to create a beautiful piece that pertains to an idea that reinforces the ideas of society. In the Public Construction article, the author stresses the idea that public art is constantly observed by the community, so it needs to be created in collaboration with the people. For DAMA, whose murals are commissions, their effort is evaluated by the community, so they must focus on the needs of the public. For me this semester, my evaluation of effort is translated by my participation and achievement of goals. In mural making, not everyone needs to be a skilled artist to be able to help paint. For me, the effort was determined by the process; it was seen in my artistic abilities and the parts I painted. Since I am an art education major, I have a background in painting and I could paint more of the complex sections and include the details. Personally, this semester was about gaining knowledge about mural making process and personal evaluation on the product. When working on the theater sets, my effort was evaluated through the participation and the finished work; they didn’t need to paint it
