Change is something that everyone goes through in their lifetime. In Daisy Miller by Henry James, a young American girl named Daisy Miller is going through a phase in her life where she does not know who she is or what she wants. While in Switzerland, Daisy meets a handsome young man named Mr. Winterbourne. It is love at first sight for the both of them. He “has a great relish for feminine beauty, he was addicted to observing and analyzing it.” (53) Daisy Miller is one mystery with her constant change of character ,yet Mr.Winterbourne is not giving up so quickly. He talks to her about the incident with Daisy. His aunt quickly disapproves of her and claims that she is just a common American girl. Winterbourne loves his aunt,but he gracefully disagrees with her assumptions, yet his aunt's words still linger in his mind. As soon as Winterbourne arrives in Rome, his first quest is to track down Ms. Miller. While on his quest, he hears all the talk about her and her encounters with multiple gentleman.When he finally reaches Daisy, the first thing that comes out of her mouth is what the reason that it took him so long to go see her. Winterbourne is confused and upset with her accusations. He tries to explain to her that she is the only thing that was on his mind the whole plane ride and his first quest was to see her and make sure she was okay. He is dumbfounded, but simply does not question it because how intrigued he is. She states that he was “awfully mean at Vevey, Switzerland.” (84) Winterbourne again tries to make it clear that he was not rude whatsoever, and that she was the rude one to have such an ugly outburst because she wanted drama between her mother and himself. Daisy just keeps her mouth shut and thinks about her actions. Daisy is constantly looking for a fight between Winterbourne and herself. She mentions a party at Mrs. Walker’s (a family friend). Just as she is talking about it, Mrs. Walker shows up and invites Mr.Winterbourne. Daisy was not too happy with it. She tells them that she is bringing “an intimate friend” (84) of hers, Giovanelli. Mr. Winterbourne is taken back and almost at a loss for words. Mrs. Walker kindly says yes ,even though she is extremely hesitant because she is proper and only associates with proper people (something that Daisy is not being). Once again Daisy goes on about how her date is the most handsome guy she has ever met, yet she mentions that no one could ever top Winterbourne. The night of the party, Daisy starts acting differently, she refuses to go to the party and instead wants to go on a walk with her intimate friend. Winterbourne walks her and he does. Winterbourne goes back to the party where he starts up a conversation with Mrs. Walker. With all the concerns that Mrs.Walker has, she goes out and demands that Daisy stop being improper before she puts a bad name for everyone she associated with. Winterbourne solely believes that Daisy will forever be “very innocent.” (91) Daisy was very disrespectful and disregarded Ms. Walker. A few months after the party, Daisy falls ill with a killer fever. As soon as Winterbourne heard, he jetted off to see her, but was denied the access to see her.
