He stares across the water, and wishes he was in the same house the green light came from. Did he have a choice in leaving? The sounds of water remind him of his young self, sailing the sea with his best friend. Jay Gatsby has longed to go back. He sees the past as his best days, and never wants to watch them go. Dan Cody was Gatsby’s best friend and father figure to him, he taught him everything he knew about being a gentleman. When Dan Cody died, Gatsby wished for him to be back again. Gatsby had parts of his life affected by Cody’s presence, “It was indirectly due to Cody that Gatsby drank so little,” he didn’t drink alcohol very much because of the fact Dan was a drunk and didn’t want to see himself or anyone else in Cody’s position (Lee 101). Gatsby also mentioned that is Dan had not died, the five years they spent together would have stretched out longer. He would have preferred to sail the ocean with his best friend than go back without him. It is obvious that Dan and Gatsby were best friends, when Nik asked about him he replied with love for Dan, “‘Who’s this?’ ‘That? That’s Mr Dan Cody, old sport.’ The name sounded faintly familiar. ‘He’s dead now. He used to be my best friend years ago’” (Lee 94). Imagine the sadness of losing your best friend, mentor and father figure. It was a life changer for Gatsby, and he wishes to go back before his death to sail away with Dan. If he had never met Dan Cody, Gatsby would be a lost, penniless, young man, wandering the streets for a low paying job.
