After a trip to the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo, Ailey got great interests in concert dance. Inspired by watching the performances of Katherine Dunham Company and having classes with Lester Horton, Alvin Ailey then started his dance training formally with Lester Horton, the founder of the first racially integrated Dance Company in this country, and began his professional dance career at age of 18. During this period, Ailey learned many different styles of dances and adopted many of Horton’s dancing techniques. After Horton died in 1953, Ailey took charge of the company, but his nontraditional education influenced him to choreograph his own works with his own dance style. At first, Ailey was not sure about being a dancer so he went to attend UCLA and San Francisco State College to study languages after graduation from high school.
The Alvin Ailey modern dance company is known internationally for their works and dancers but how they began is a very interesting story. The company formed in 1958 and just two years later one of the most memorable and notable performances of the company was created, “.Revelations”. Although Alvin Ailey was the creator and director of this company, Ailey’s style and the technique he used and that the company still uses stems from Lester Horton. Horton was a pivotal teacher for Ailey and inspired him to create a company and carry on this technique from Horton. This paper will illustrate the beginning influence Horton had on Ailey and how the company has grown overtime.

As a first-generation Sri Lankan-American, people often assume I am Indian-American, which creates even more confusion than my feelings of being torn between two cultures. In response, as a young teenager, I began to feel like I did not belong anywhere and began to crave acceptance. I did not know where I stood. Fortunately, in middle school, I began taking Sri Lankan dance classes at the local Buddhist Temple.

Is Dance a Sport or an Art? Some people think dance is not a sport. They think it’s an art because it is nothing but remembering dance moves. However, I believe dance is a sport.
I have danced ballet since the age of three, but it was at thirteen that I experienced a moment not unlike a scene in a romance novel in which the characters are thunderstruck by the realization they are in love. Suddenly I realized that I wanted to dance more, and I wanted to dance forever, and I wanted to give ballet everything. I consider myself lucky amongst my peers: not many kids are afforded the opportunity to really and voluntarily sacrifice for the love of something as arbitrary as art. But ballet demands sacrifice, and I wouldn 't be me without it. When my father 's kidneys failed, I danced.
I am an open, energetic, and hardworking individual. I believe I will be a successful member of FTKrew and can help contribute to Dance Marathon overall. I have been taught responsibility, discipline, integrity and much more.
