Black Female Presence; Tennis and Dance In Claudia Rankine’s, Citizen, she addresses a various amount of relatable circumstances as an African American. Rankine addresses a specific black figure in America, Serena Williams, as an example of a resilient and strong black female athlete. Serena is one of the examples in which Rankine points out racial inequality, and microaggressions in sports, she also opens up about the stereotypes placed in front of Serena and the personas Serena had to play for years of her career. I've found that in both dance and tennis, black women have faced judgement from spectacle, competed with mostly white counterparts, and have had to consistently reclaim their undeniable contribution to the sport and art form.

I attended a Nashville Irish Stepdancers performance at the Texas Troubadour Theater. The theater was in the middle of a strip mall in Orpy Mills. The inside was setup with pews and had a very medieval essence. The performance was to be a celebration of the Irish culture and include the vibrant spirit of the heritage. In the program, the choreographer and founder of the Nashville Irish Step Dancers, Mary Moran, said that the show not only highlights traditional pieces, such as the jig and treble reel, but also explores more progressive styles of Irish dance and music.

Australian Dance Theatre, established in 1965 by Elizabeth Cameron Dalman, is the longest standing contemporary dance company in Australia, recently celebrating 50 years. Whilst the company has created a remarkable 50 years of innovative and original work, many state that the concepts and ideas have vastly changed from the company Dalman established. Over the last five decades, Australian Dance Theatre has continued to develop, with the evolution of six individual artistic directors, who produced work in their distinct style, developing unique aesthetics.
The reason I am passionate about teamwork is because when people work together they usually share many characteristics. They have a common purpose each member is committed to. They stay involved until the objective is completed. They care about each other: and, in keeping with this, they are concerned about how their actions and attitudes affect each other. Culture is the shared characters of religion, language, symbols, values, norms, and routines of a specific group. With such a large concept like a culture, there’s bound to be more profound subgenres of cultures to better classify them. Subcultures are more compacted cultural groups within a vast culture. Subcultures can be formed from a person’s racial ethnicity or customs, and examples of subcultures can be Miami’s Cuban-American community to Greek Life on campus. Two of these many subcultures are high culture and low culture.
Hip-hop culture has been the topic of various academic, social, and political discourses. Rap music, in particular, has made its way to mainstream media which is evident in the numerous films and movies that centers on what was once a part of an underground culture. Scholars explain that the popularity of hip-hop in both music and films are partly due to its potential to disseminate information, address an issue, and promote social change. Tinson and McBride (2013), for example, note that hip-hop is a “…form of critical education at the intersection of, and inseparable from political engagement” (1). Scholars further note that hip-hop’s current state “…requires frequent accounting of its engagement with the social, political, and cultural climate
Within any society there may be different cultures as well as subcultures. The components of cultures and subcultures are symbols, language, values and norms. Small societies tend be culturally uniform in comparison to large societies tend to contain numerous subcultures. A subculture is a group within a larger culture, that has norms, beliefs, values, and behavioral patterns that are distinguishable from the larger society. Examples of a subculture include bikers, skaters, hackers, gamers, etc.
I found myself good at keeping our teammates at peace with each other, and compromising when we are at a disagreement. We all would agree as to what each person would do, and would come together to find solutions to problems. There were aspects that my teammates excelled in, and other aspects that I excelled in. These differences did not separate us, but instead allowed us to grow closer and work together better. Nobody would try to fight over what they did best, and our tasks would all be completed.
If someone told me that I would be a dance major and study at The College at Brockport during my sophomore year of high school, I probably would have thought them to be crazy. Dancing was never meant to be in the picture and it was something that I stumble upon towards my final weeks as a sophomore. I had a choice to between tennis or taking a dance class to fulfill my P.E. requirements. I eventually chose dance and it create a new path for me. Unfortunately, I decided that I want to go into communication during my freshman year at El Paso Community College.
There is a common saying that says, “teamwork makes the dream work” and I think that is especially true. Most sports are played as a team, which allows you to depend on your others in order to perform well. On every team that I have been a part of there have been people I haven’t necessarily liked or got along with. Learning to deal with these types of people was a big challenge for me to overcome. At first, I tried to ignore or avoid those individuals that I didn’t get a long with, but that was impossible.
Subcultures are values and norms different from those of the majority and are held by a group within a wider society, these social groups are organized around shared interests and practices. A subculture is usually attached to clothes music and other visible fronts within the given community, that is part of the general society. Subcultures contain individuals who think alike who feel like they are not a part of the bigger culture of society and then create a sense of identity for themselves. The term Hip Hop is used as a subcultural movement. Scholars such as Carl and Virgil Taylor emphasize “Hip-Hop is not only a genre of music, but also a complex system of ideas, values and concepts that reflect newly emerging and ever-changing creative correlative expressive mechanisms including but not limited to song, poetry, film and fashion.”
What is it to be a Nerd? When asked to write about a sub culture that I was apart of several ideas went through my head. I could write about my belief system or my family’s own sub culture. But I realized that one subculture that I am apart of and one that I am constantly growing in is this nerd culture. This aspect of going to the comic book store with my brother and talking with the people that work there and seeing what they have to stay about the new story arc of Thor or Hawkeye.
