Did you know that Dante Alighieri is seen as “The Father of Modern Italian?” He wrote what was considered to be the greatest work of literature composed in Italian. Dante was one of the best Italian poets, philosophers, and scholars. Throughout this piece, I will be informing you about Alighieri’s life, career, contributions, and what life would be like without his works. Dante was born on May 21, 1265. He was born into a very politically involved family, which is a major part to his life later on. But, when Dante was only a young boy, his mother passed away. Dante held multiple important public posts about what he believes in for the Florentine political scene. However, in 1302, he fell out of favor and was exiled for life by the leaders of the Black Guelphs. Even though he was driven out of Florence, this was the beginning of his most productive artistic period. During his exile, Dante withdrew from all political activities and began writing his Latin treatise, “De Vulgari Eloquentia.” This piece was unfinished, yet influential. Dante’s location had been unknown for many years during his exile. But, it is known that he began to write his most famous piece, The Divine Comedy, around the time that King Henry VII was elected emperor, but then his popularity quickly faded. His piece, The Divine Comedy, is “An allegory of human life presented as a visionary trip through the Christian afterlife” (Biography.com). Dante’s first poem is written in 1st person from his own perspective. This poem has sections for each tier of the afterlife: purgatory, heaven, and hell.
