In the 1300s, Petrarch, an Italian scholar who coined the term "dark age" after the all of Rome during the 500s through the 1500s because he thought it was a chaotic time.(Movie Talk "dark age") The "dark age" took place during all the Crusades. This did help make population smaller and it did increase food supply. This illustrates that Europe was not in a "dark age" as it will be explained. Europe was not in a "dark age" really and it did improve Europe's food and population grew bigger which meant more farming.
In the Dark Ages, there were many technology improvements, such as “the heavy plow, the shoulder collar for horses, metal horseshoes, and more efficient water and windmills” (Doc. B) They made many things that were helpful to producing food, and travel. Which means in this “dark” time Europe was actually improving, not declining. Meaning that the Dark Ages wasn’t a dark time, because technology continued to advance.

Another reason why the middle ages were referred to as dark is because of the decline in production of culture. “The passage illustrates medieval education, which was provided primarily at monasteries or church schools and was not available to most people” (Doc E). This was the adapters note from a passage about a monk who went to Chartres to study Hippocrates and it says how education was not provided for most people, which explains why there was a decline in culture because only very little could get educated. “I learned the ordinary symptoms of diseases and picked up surface knowledge of ailments. This was not enough to satisfy my desires” (Doc E).
The Dark Ages consisted of invasion, and loss of trade and government. “The barbarians have broken through the ramparts. The Saracen [Moors] invasions have spread in successive waves over the South. There is no longer any trade, only unceasing terror...society has no longer any government,” (Doc. 1). These problems led to the decline and therefore this period of time was named the Dark Ages.

They could defend from attacks and even prepare to launch attacks from their own castles. These castles were originally made of timber and wood. Later on they were replaced with stone to be stronger. Castles were sometimes built on hills but, most of the time they were built in the best place for defence. After the middle ages castles weren't built as much.
