As mentioned throughout the presentation, mythological symbols and archetypes can be found in many texts and can be interpreted differently, too. Most texts that utilize mythological aspects are usually poems or songs and some may only refer to a myth. For example, in the song Dark Horse by Katy Perry and Juicy J, the lyrics refer to Aphrodite, the Greek goddess of love and beauty. She uses this reference to tell her lover to treat her like a goddess and all of her love will be given to him. Therefore, the text that I will be analysing is based upon on a mythological interpretation of the song “Icarus” by White Hinterland. The image of water can be referred to the birth-death-resurrection because the lyrics say “I watch you skate like a knife/Beneath the water” which is represented through Icarus drowning in the Icarian Sea after his wings were destroyed. The sea can be symbolised as the mother of all life and a spiritual mystery to infinity. The flight of Icarus’ myth does not say if he drowned in the water, but most interpretations mention he died and that he was resurrected which can be implied when the lyrics say “Why must I always see the ending?/ At the beginning.” This lyric can be seen as resurrection because one knows how they died and when they’re reborn they already see the ending which referring to their death.
