The book “Dateline Troy” by Paul Fleischman turns the Trojan War into an occasion for social studies, with the result that his audience may have to sacrifice some of the pleasures of reading in exchange for a fresh approach to history or current events. In Greek mythology, Helen of Troy also known as Helen of Sparta, or simply Helen, was said to have been the most beautiful woman in the world, she was also married to King Menelaus of Sparta. On the tenth day when the Troy visited Sparta to make peace, Helen runs away secretly with Prince Paris of Troy, resulting in the Trojan War. Legend has is that Helen was under Aphrodite spell to fall in love with Prince Paris of Troy which resulted in having the Trojan War.
The Roman civilization, strongly influenced by ancient Greeks, adopted several aspects of Greek religion and mythology, combining them with their beliefs and creating a unique religious system. This cross-cultural exchange developed in the adaptation of various Greek gods into the Roman pantheon, while they were frequently altered to associate with Roman values and lifestyles. The Greek goddess of love and beauty, Aphrodite, was associated with Venus in Roman mythology. Like Venus, she conserved her role as the goddess of love, fertility, and beauty, while also being linked with prosperity and victory (Britannica, 2023).

Years ago when gods and goddesses still roamed the Earth, the Goddess of love and beauty, Aphrodite, fell in love with a mortal. Since then, they’ve been living their lives with their beautiful daughter named Arzaylea. Arzaylea was a loving daughter who cared about her parents very much. Everyday, she would go to the market to buy fresh food to cook for her family. In many eyes, they believed Arzaylea was the prettiest women alive and indeed she was.

Ares was a very courageous and beautiful god, which definitely helps the fact that he won over Aphrodite while she was still married to Hephaistos (Cartwright). As a matter of fact, Ares had two children with Aphrodite, one being Harmonia and the other being Eros who was the god of love and desire (Cartwright). While Ares and Aphrodite were together, Hephaistos caught the two of them and Ares was temporarily banished from Mount Olympus
These goddesses were Athena god of wisdom, Aphrodite god of beauty, and Hera goddess of marriage and birth Eris who happens to be goddess of strife and discord gave them a golden apple. This golden apple marked who was the fairest and just. Zeus ended up sending the goddesses to Paris. The goddesses all tempted Paris to make his decision. Hera offered a beautiful marriage.
It is only fitting that the goddess of love and temptation is a temptress, as she uses her beauty to lure men. In some ways Aphrodite relates to the Siren. Aphrodite, although not commenly known, is the goddess of the sea and seafaring. Sirens and Aphrodite are similar as, they are both temptresses and have to do with sea travelers. The difference between the two is that Sirens lure sea travelers to their demise and Aphrodite is the goddess of the sea travels.
The myth of Pyramus and Thisbe is a great example of the character archetype “The star-crossed lovers” because it describes a love affair that was disapproved of from the start and ended tragically. Pyramus and Thisbe being kept apart snuck away to meet each other at the white mulberry tree. The bloody lion (fate) stepped into the story by scaring away Thisbe leaving nothing by her veil ( representing her presence) now bloody and torn for Pyramus to see. Believing she was murdered, he stabbed himself because he couldn’t bear to live without her. Thisbe not wanting to disappoint her lover came out of hiding only to see his corpse on the ground.
In the Greek creation story there are several goddesses created, but there is only one or two whose story is more than but a few lines. The creation of Aphrodite is different than the creation of the others. Most of the other goddesses are the result of a comingling of the primal deities, but Aphrodite is created from the castrated genitals of Ouranos. In many cultures, societies, and religions, men are generally placed as being superior to women. The story of Aphrodite’s creation may offer some deeper psychological insight into this way of thinking within the Greek culture.
Aphrodite was born when Uranus was defeated by Zeus and the New Gods, a drop of Uranus’s blood fell into the Ocean and caused it to bubble. From the sea emerged Aphrodite full grown and beautiful. Aphrodite was the goddess of love. She had no other jobs or duties except to look pretty and have others fall in love with her.

Zeus was as cruel as God, and they invariably thought of themselves, and considered their life insignificant. In the bible, God punished people who didn’t believed in him, even took their life. In the Greek myths, Zeus also took lives of neighbors of Philemon and Baucis, because he thought they who dwelt in the valley wicked and deserved penalty. The strong power .doesn’t mean they can hurt others, which makes think of officers.
Amongst the many women portrayed in the book, the two most important women are Athena and Penelope. Athena is the Goddess of wisdom, courage, law & justice, strength and skills. She plays the role of a mentor in disguise for Odysseus but doesn’t show him the full path to his destination as Athena wants Odysseus to fight and prevail on his own. Penelope is the wife of Odysseus and the mortal queen of Ithaca.
