In the Dominican Republic, women were expected to go by what their husbands and fathers said. Women portrayed to have less power and authority than men. In “In the Time of the Butterflies”, the Mirabal sisters showed something very differently, instead they demonstrated the equal authority they have with their husbands. Their power challenged gender limitations that were forced on them by their patriarchal Dominican culture. Minerva, Patria, and Maria Teresa all were sisters who became involved in political movements against President Trujillo.
Beowulf and Gilgamesh compare and differ greatly in the epic hero texts. This shows many traits that shape the two epics into what is the same and different. The main reasons that compare and contrast the epics is leadership, culture, and the journey. The monsters is a big part of the epics as well because it shows how they deal with them. Like how Beowulf's monsters terrorize him, and Gilgamesh was out to get the monsters.

The short stories “The Lamp at Noon” by Sinclair Ross and “Granite Point” by W. D. Valgardson are similar because of their theme, conflict and mood. Both of the short stories showcase the theme of selfishness along with the negative effects it causes. “That may not matter to the others but I won’t have that kind of talk about my wife” is meant to demonstrate the selfishness of Mathew. Blinded by jealousy, Mathew asked Kloski to stop coming to his house to meet with Ellen. Concerned by his own desires, Mathew forgot to consider Ellen’s feelings.

The three authors touch on literature with passion, "The portable phonograph" written by Walter Van Tilburg Clark, "The Lamp At Noon" written by Sinclair Ross, and "The Possibility Of Evil" written by Shirley Jackson are filled with elements of good literature which makes each of them a good read. Each short story is example of good literature because they deal with subjects of lasting significance, they are beautifully written, and the authors illuminate the world of nature. All of the stories are good but "The Possibility Of Evil" written by Shirley Jackson soars above with it's intriguing touch on on dual personality, which makes the story a beautiful read. The main characters of the written version and radio play of “Dark They Were, and Golden Eyed” are similar and different in many ways. In the article “Dark They Were, and Golden Eyed”, the author, Ray Bradbury, depicts his main characters by descriptions and written dialogue. In the radio play of “Dark They Were, and Golden Eyed”, the producer, Michael McDonough, depicted his main characters through dialogue and sound effects. Both of these people displayed their characters to have similar personalities and used the same main characters.
Edgar Allan Poe had experienced a loss multiple times. Poe married his cousin when she was 13, he was 27. Both of Poe’s parents died in 1811 and so he was raised as a foster child. In the poem “Annabel Lee” he talks about how his love Annabel Lee passed away. In the poem “The Raven” he talks about his love, Lenore passing away and The Raven comes to him and is repetitive.
Medieval literature shows the change of heroes throughout centuries. For the English medieval times, two story’s heroes stand out: Le Morte d'Arthur’s Lancelot and Beowulf’s Beowulf. Lancelot, the patient, humble, and chivalrous knight, is contrasted by Beowulf, a boastful, proud, and rowdy viking. It clearly shows how stories have changed in their depiction of protagonists. Both Beowulf and Lancelot are great warriors and leaders but that is where their similarities end.
In the epics of Beowulf, The Song of Roland, and Sundiata, great displays of bravery, loyalty, and spiritual discipline were shown. In each epic, there are different but still important lessons and displays of these attributes shown. The Tale of Roland and Beowolf show more physical and violent displays of bravery from their main characters, while Sundiata shows more of a mental strength and courage. In the story of Sundiata, Sundiata’s was rough for a prince.
Both of these stories use the theme of isolation, madness, symbolism and have an ironic ending.
Edgar Allan Poe’s frightening gothic style poetry and short novels about fear, love, death and horror are prominent to Gothic Literature and explore madness through a nerve-recking angle. The incredible, malformed author, poet, editor and novelist is recognized for his famous classical pieces such as “The Raven”, “Berenice” and “The Tell-Tale Heart”, pieces of work that mystically yet magnificently awakens readers with a gloomy spirit. Awakening the subject of madness through written work was viewed as insane during Poe’s times.
