Darwin defined natural selection in his book On The Origin Of Species as “principle, by which each slight variation, if useful, is preserved.” (p.61). This means that there are genetic variations within a species, and organisms with traits most suited to the environment will survive better than others, and therefore those traits get passed on. It is important that these traits are genetic, as that is the only way to pass traits on. When this happens through multiple generations, speciation will occur.
