Casta paintings were used to show different ranks in race and status. Most would think since the Creoles were high on the hierarchy there would be no purpose of creoles revolting. However problems ran deeper than hierarchical status, the Creoles did not have a voice that one would think they had.There are three main reasons as to why the Creoles led the for Latin American Independence is because they wanted control over politics, social status, and economics. In 1807 only 12 of the 99 judgeships in Latin America were held by Creoles. As a result, Creoles started to realize the Spanish was an inconvenience (Doc B). The Creoles were Americans by birth and Europeans by law which made their position complicated (Doc A). Creoles felt as if they should be politically led by people who were American-born people instead of the Peninsulares. An example of this is Spain using mercantilism to forced the Creoles to sell their products at low prices and buy what the creoles need at high prices(Doc C). The Creoles felt that the Spain should have control over their own affairs. A drought occurred in 1808-1809, destroying livestock and harvest, increased prices, and unemployment rose(Doc F). This contributes to why the creoles led the fight for independence since Spain used the creoles, the creoles felt they didn’t have support for Spain. In addition, Spain basically stole their money; one way to make someone angry is to take their
