Religion. It’s a beautiful thing right? The different ideas, beliefs, and perspectives on things. But religion has a power so scarily strong. Religion can impact a whole country for the best or the worst. Within this essay I'm going to talk about the enduring issue of the impact of ideas and beliefs. An enduring issue is one that many societies have attempted to address with varying degrees of success. The impact of ideas and beliefs means that our ideas and beliefs shape how we view things, or how we are as a person. Some people's ideas and beliefs can be so strong that they are blind to how it affects others. A person's ideas or beliefs can come from observation, religion, parents, books, or friends. During this time Ashoka Maurya was the emperor, his family created his empire through conquering other kingdoms in brutal wars. Ashoka continued to fight wars and expand his empire until one day all of the destruction made him realize how violent he was, that his conquest killed hundreds of thousands of people. This made him convert to Buddhism and changed his empire's government based on Buddhist teachings. In document 1 it states, “His family created an empire by conquering other kingdoms in brutal wars and when Ashoka became the king he continued to fight wars and expand the empire. During his reign, Ashoka converted to Buddhism and from that point onwards he based all of his government policies on Buddhist teachings.” Because of his ideas and beliefs and Buddhism, his reign of destruction and death was over. In 1979 their government became a theocracy, a form of government based on a religion. The laws are based on the religious leaders interpretations of the Quran and Sharia Law. But women in Iran are treated very unfairly because of these laws. In document five it states, “A theocracy is a type of government that is based on a religion. It is run by religious figures and its laws are based in religious laws. Since 1979, the Iran’s laws have been based on Islamic law, called Sharia. Though there are elected positions in Iran’s government, the ultimate power is held by religious leaders who ensure that all government actions are in line with their interpretation of the Quran and Sharia Law.” and it also states that, “The grim statutes [laws] that I would spend the rest of my life fighting stared back at me from the page: the value of a woman's life was half that of a man… The laws, in short, turned the clock back fourteen hundred years, to the early days of Islam's spread, the days when stoning women for adultery and chopping off the hands of thieves were considered appropriate sentences ....” Till this day women in Iran are still badly affected by these Iran
