In the film dead poets society Peter weir uses various film techniques to portray the impact Mr Keating has on his students in becoming free thinkers. Peter Weir portrays Mr Keating as a teacher who doesn’t follow the normal guide lines to teach English, by teaching his students to put passion in their writing and that itdoesn’t follow a strict formula. One technique that is used various times to show the impact of Mr Keating is camera movement, it is used many different times in the classroom to show that impact that Mr Keating has on his students. This technique is shown in the final scene of the movie to enhance the impact of Mr Keating. The pull-back shot that shows all of his students standing on their desks after they have called out “oh captain, my captain”to Mr Keating who is leaving helps to show his impact on the students as they are not allowed to be standing on the tables and they would most likely get in trouble for what they are doing. Peter Weir mainly uses close up composition shots of Mr Keating’s students to show the audience that Mr Keating’s style of teaching is working. In the scene where Mr Keating is explaining why we read and write poetry he says “O me O life of the questions of these recurring of the endless trains of the faithless of cities filled with the foolish what good amid these, O me, O life Answer. That you are here - that life exists, and identity that the powerful play goes on and you may contribute a verse. What will your verse be?” after this is said there are many composition shots on a few of his student’s faces. It is as if something inside of them has awoken and they finally understand that they have a role to play in this world, not matter how big or small they can be whatever it is they
