All cases mentioned—except Justine Damond—have the possibility of racial profiling to be one of the reasons the officers involved acted the way they did. Anthony Baez was a Hispanic male which means he was a gang member, a criminal and tended to be violent. While Eric Garner, Philando Castile, and Amadou Diallo; were all African American males which means they could be drug dealers,
The assailant should have just given up, but he didn’t. Even though most people think that the penal system is not racist some people, like congresswoman Maxine Waters, say that “the color of your skin dictates whether you will be arrested or not, prosecuted harshly or less harshly, or receive a stiff sentence or gain probation or entry into treatment (“Is the Criminal Justice System Racist”). Even at a 2008 debate ”Barack Obama charged that blacks and whites “are arrested at very different rates, are convicted at very different rates, [and] receive very different sentences ... for the same crime” (“Is the Criminal Justice System
On top of this, the police didn’t find any physical evidence that linked DeLuna to the crime scene, and they didn’t conduct any forensic analysis. These easily preventable mistakes made by the police force almost certainly wouldn’t have occurred if DeLuna had been a white man. He was sentenced to death simply for being a Hispanic man near the scene of a
And the sad part is if I had known what I know now then I would have not been so surprised. This justice system is unfair, to all of its citzens, but more so black and brown citizens. Michael Brown and his family deserved for justice to brought. Some try and say that michael was a thug or like to bring up the fact that he had possible stolen something but the fact remains that an unarmed teen was killed by a police officer. An oifficer who was supposed to serve and
The Passing by Nella Larson captures the clash between the status quo and the weakening driving forces of change that young African-American women faced in the 1920’s. The novel introduces the dynamic of two pale-skinned African-American women, Irene and Clare who are childhood friends that are light enough to pass for “white”. Though Irene chooses to live as a black woman, she’s only a part of the black community seemingly as she practices white standards while living as a black woman. On the other hand, Clare chooses to live as a white woman as she adjusts any behavior, appearance, and etc. to break any ties between her and black culture, but ultimately, she tries to find a way back into the black community.
It is scary to think that all they needed was two white women to falsely accuse them and it is even scarier to think that the deputies, those who were trusted to bring justice, pressured these women to do this because they were twisted enough to take joy in tearing a black person’s life to shreds. I guess that is something these two stories had in
Along with her father’s disapproval and lack of acceptance, the death of her youngest sister, Ruth May, also led to Leah’s rift between her family and the American lifestyle. Within her life, Leah’s leadership role led her to feel somewhat responsible to take care of the rest of her siblings. Even though Leah considered Ruth May’s death to be partially her fault due to her believed responsibility over her, Leah also found fault within her father and God. According to Elaine R. Ognibene, “Leah loses any faith that she had left in both her father and his God when Ruth May dies from a venomous snake, and her father has no words to explain the child’s death, except that his youngest daughter “wasn’t baptised yet.”... the daughter who had idolized
Larsen argues that Irene is unable to put herself in Brian's shoes since she is considered white passing. Her selfishness is why she is unable to accept why Brian wants to move so he and one of his sons do not face more prosecution. “I wish you wouldn’t talk about lynching before Ted and Junior” (Larsen 69). She refuses to fathom the prosecution of some members in her family. The only reason that Irene wishes to stay in New York is because she will lose everything she has built over the years.
In her reading Carson develops her position on chemicals use by employing imagery. Her examples serve to contemplate the readers by providing the negative influences of chemicals such as “ Everywhere was a shadow of death” (2). Carson’s diction in the phrase provides an example of imaginary by conveying his message through the disaster of animals dying due to the chemicals being released. However, the author also demonstrates the consequences of the chemicals to human beings by stating that “ doctors had become more and more puzzled by new kinds of sickness appearing among their patients” (2) The recent appearances of new diseases occur in the same time of recently used of 200 new chemicals that were used to kill insects, weeds, and rodents.
Brown was going to kill Wilson if he did not kill him first, the media was trying to shame the cop by putting a picture of Mike in the newspaper in his cap n gown. Additionally, like the judge told the jury “You cannot base this case off of your own personal experience” but off of the facts of what happened. Police officers risk their lives every day for our own safety and well-being. Think about it this way police officers do not know what they are getting into walking up on these criminals, all they know is that the person is a criminal. As a society, we tend to take the “race” and use it for everything because we just know that everything is black and white.
There has been conflicting information about the shooting death of Michael Brown. Police said that Brown was overacting during a confrontation with Wilson, but the witnesses said that Brown was attempting to surrender and was shot without provocation. This details is still in dispute but no matter what if the police is white, or black, he should not shoot an unarmed teenager several shot to death. If it happens to the middle class white person, there would not be protests for justice because of the officer would be punished quickly and would be in jail. It seems like the police department is protecting a murder.
While reading this article “The Michael Brown Legacy: Police Brutality and Minority” it informs the reader about the short life of an African American by the name of Michael Brown. Michael Brown was an 18 year old African American who was killed in Ferguson, Missouri by a white police officer. The police officer that killed the unarmed teenager was Darrew Wilson. After everyone heard of Michael Brown death the streets of Ferguson were packed with protesters saying “Black lives Matter”. After a couple of weeks the St. Louis prosecutor said that the grand jury will not indict Darrew Wilson for the death of Michael Brown.
Dreams are often viewed as peaceful escapes, but sometimes dreams make someone's worst nightmares come true. In a excerpt from Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier, The narrator describes a dream where she walks up on a abandon house that has been consumed by nature. The author uses spooky diction to describe the many setting of the story. She used words like nightmarish, tenacious, and haunting to describe the gate the trail and the house. This setting created a very dreary mood.
The article University of Cincinnati officer indicted in shooting death of Samuel Dubose tells the story an unarmed black man shot by a white police officer because of a traffic stop violation. The officer then lied about the circumstances under which Samuel Dubose was shot, and was not even questioned until video evidence proved otherwise. “This raised hard questions about law enforcement use of force and the other role of race in policing.” The government in general, but especially when it comes to
A poor innocent African-American boy was shot to death, because his image brought him up to look like a robber, according to a white cop. The white cop did what anyone apparently is expected to do, and shoot what was somehow “threatening” him. Is the cop in jail? No, they let him go because it was meant to be an act of “self defence”. The fact that he murdered an innocent boy for completely no good reason, has been totally ignored. "
