During world war 2, over 60 million people were killed. This includes the Holocaust, There were 6+ milion jewish people were massacred by the nazi regime in germany due to their beliefs. “The book Theif” takes places during these horrific events in world history. In the book, Death itself examines the effects of the war and the Holocaust on normal German citizens in an objective, unseen perpective. More importantly, Death follows the experiences of a normal, poor girl trying to navigate through her childhoodduring these events. Hans was the first person to care for Liesel Meminger in her new life . hHe was being constantly yelled at by his wife Rosa Hubemann and people kind of pushed him over. For example, his son, who was an active member of the Nazi party, often yelled as his father for being different, but on multiple occasions, Hans wittnessed violations of the UDHR changed him. One time, Hans was a part of an witnessed violations of article 19 and article 5 when “papa (Hans Hubermann) reached into his paint cart and pulled something out….. The jew stood before, expecting another handful of debris, but he watched as Hans Hubermann held out his hand and presented a piece of bread….Wading throug, a soldier was at the scene of the crime… The jew was whipped six times… then it was papa’s turn.” hanas was punished just because he was helping a jewish person. This violates Article 19 of the UDHR as “everyone has the right to freedom of opinion and expression,” and also violates article 5 of the UDHR as “ no one shall be subjected to torture or to cruel, inhumane or degrading treatment.” Hans was punished and cruel, degrading way because of his opinion and expression. Abandoned by her family, and given a new life in a new place. Liesel wass met by many challenges. To make things worse, she had to deal with world war 2 and the holocaust . When she first arrived at the Hubermanns, she was very quit , and scared of the world. She had no one in her corner except Hans, and eventually rudy. There are many things that are catalysts to Liesels transformation . one of them is when she hears rudys story about “the jessie owen incidents,” where Rudy was being yelled at by his father, “ because they’ll take you away ….. Beacuse you shouldnt want to be like black or jewish people or anyone who is… not us.” when Liesel heard about this and also hears about how people thought Rudy was crazy because of it, she was angry. She realized that apparently people arent allowed to think what they want , like Rudy . This is a dirct violation of article 19, which states the fact thst “everyone has the right to freedom of opinion and expression…” As Liesesl hears about rudy and how he is misunderstood by everyone, it enables her to open up to him. This causes a vast friendship and a bond evenaully allows liesel to be compassionate and love other. The other side effect of this was that it allowed liesel to start to understand the world and the suppression that she lived in. This friendship was all due to the
