Death of a Salesman Analysis In the play by Arthur Miller, the main character Willy Loman is a man in his 60’s. He is dressed in a drab coloured, ill-fitting suit. Willy shows early signs of dementia, as he spends much of the play having flashbacks or incorporating the past into present day situations. Through this the viewer learns much about Willy and his past.
After a forced evacuation from their house in a condemned building in Tehran, the couple of Emad and Rana relocate to a small flat recommended by Babak, a fellow actor in their theatrical adaptation of Arthur Miller’s, “Death of a Salesman”. However, what Babak failed to say, was that Ahu, the previous tenant, was a rather promiscuous woman whose belongings were left behind with the intention to remove them in the near future. When Emad stays late for a rehearsal, Rana returns home to wait for him and then, the unspeakable happens… Waiting for Emad, Rana unwisely opens up the main door and goes for a shower, while a stranger looking for Ahu enters the house and attempts to violate the poor woman.
Death of a Salesman fits into a post-romantic worldview because of its lack of reality. In Death of a Salesman, Willie Loman creates an alternate world for himself because of how bad he believes his life is. Eventually, Willie convinces himself that this alternate world is his reality. Death of a Salesman does not fit into the 19th century because, in a romantic worldview, everything is/was based off of reality.
The play meets the criteria for a tragedy because Willy Loman, the misguided protagonist of the story, sets out to accomplish something that he thinks is right for him, his success, and his family, but, ironically, his actions are the very thing that causes pain and hardship for him and everyone around him. Loman, whose ideas of achieving perfection have been frustrated due to his incapacity to face his weaknesses, cope with his limitations, and confront his real self, is the reason the play can be categorized as a tragedy. Miller evokes pity and fear in his audience throughout the story, portrays Loman as a man who is plagued by his American Dream that is unrealistic and impractical, and finally uses Willy’s suicide as his inevitable defeat through his own actions and flaws. Tragedy refers to the continuation of unfortunate events that develops over a period of time. Making the characters involved in these events experience painful moments and emotion. A tragedy is a situation when the unexpected happened. to result to adverse effect which makes individuals develops emotional feelings that affect their life. Tragedies are popular in our societies.

The father of the family, Willy Loman is a self-deluded traveling salesman whose dreams of success do not match his reality. Prompted by his frustration due to the discrepancy between his unrealistically ambitious expectations and his reality, we watch as his mental health takes a turn for the worse, and his story eventually ends in suicide.
What is success? Miller manages to expose the grim side of the American dream. Each character chases their own versions of it. That said, I would argue that Willy’s dream is not the epitome of the American dream.
“ Ben: The jungle is dark but full of diamonds, Willy” stated by Arthur Miller (134). In other words Ben was telling his dad the world is full of secret, danger when they take new opportunities in their job, but also they create new opportunities for their family. For example today’s working parents choose to go to work on weekends because they need the money. In my own words, I would define tragedy as being an event that happened unexpectedly which causes a negative change in an individual or affecting the entire family as a whole regarding how big the tragedy was. According to my definition, Death of a Salesman can be considered as a tragedy as well as not a tragedy in others perspective due to how they define tragedy. According to Merriam Webster tragedy is defined as, “a serious drama typically describing a conflict between the protagonist and a superior force and having a sorrowful or disastrous conclusion that elicits pity or terror”. Tragedy can spread. In Death of a Salesman, Willy Loman is the protagonist, however he not the only person in the play who’s story ends tragically. His view on life spreads to those close to him. Primarily, Willy teaches it to his children who look up to him while his wife simply attaches herself to him, rooting for him in blind support while really she should be waking him up to the cold and dark reality that is their life. Throughout the play, the Loman family evolves differently.

The specific work that was used for this written piece is by Arthur Miller and is entitled “Death of a Salesman” which is a play showing the life of a man who lives in an eluded American dream. Arthur Miller’s first version of Death of a Salesman was a short story which he wrote in his seventeen, Miller in his own words said that this story based on a real man who thrown himself under a train, after that Miller in his autobiography admit that he found the inspiration of Willy Loman character in his uncle Manny Newman, a travelling salesman who favoured pride over truth who has been called ‘’ the American King Lear’’, at the same time his son Buddy is the original version of Biff who is also a sports champion and flirt with girls just like Happy Loman, so he divided Buddy’s character into Loman’s son, so it’s all about Miller’s uncle who prefers his pride on the actual reality, therefore Miller work on mixing personal an thematic levels to produce such work ( Carson 23). As for the title of Miller’s masterpiece, it has various meanings on different levels that could be seen by different point of views, so Death of a Salesman is a kind of plays in which the title is significant but not obviously so, firstly and the most obvious meaning that it refers to Willy, the salesman who commit his suicide by the end of the play so logically Death of a Salesman as a title is perfectly presented this man destiny.

The concept is generally known as a promising ideal, but it is accepted that the reality of this idea is often less than perfect. In the play Death of a Salesman, Arthur Miller critiques the negative aspects of the American Dream and the individual’s obsession with this dream through the tragic character of Willy Loman. The American Dream is demonstrated through Loman’s obsession with his idea of success, which combines financial and social success and subsequently cannot separate the two ideas from each other, or from reality. The Fantasy of Life Tragedy, Britannica defines tragedy as a "branch of drama that treats in a serious and dignified style the sorrowful or terrible events encountered or caused by a heroic individual.". Throughout Arthur Miller 's Death of a Salesman it becomes abundantly clear that Willy, a salesman in his mature stages of life, struggles to distinguish fantasy from reality as we are transported into his last few days of life that include memories and visions of the past. Because his moral is a bit askew, many do not agree that Willy is worthy of the title "tragic hero"; however, I believe that Willy is the tragic hero that Miller intended him to be.
