Sampson was called by God from birth (13:5) and distinctive not only from the surrounding nations but from Israel itself. As Israel experiences the pendulum swing of apostasy, to judgement, to deliverance and back, they look for final and ultimate deliverance and hope to be found in Samson. This was what he was intended for but becomes the antitheses of the activity he participates in. At the end of most of the efforts of the judges there is rest in the land for a certain amount of years, however at the end of Samson’s life there is only his death and more death brought by his own. In Samson’s case, although his parents are visited by the Angel twice, he doesn’t seem to have a construct to offer him education in the word or anyone to tutor him through his maturation as a Nazarite. Jesus is seen growing in wisdom, stature and favor with God and man. Both were in response to the “Spirit of the Lord coming mightily upon him.” (14:6) or a result of the type of might he believed God should give to him. The first was when he killed a Lion with his bare hands. The Lion is known as the symbol of empire, of a super power. The text states that he, tore it apart with his bare hands. (14:6) The second was in his prowess in tearing down the temple of Dagon with his bare hands. In both cases he simply utilized physical strength and ultimately does not bring deliverance but simply brings death. The calling Samson had heightened his responsibility and ultimately enhanced the effect he had on those around him. Because of the distinctive calling Samson received he could not live a neutral life. If he chose to live in contrast to what he was called to, he would bring the antitheses to what he was meant to bring to Israel. Although Samson was intended to bring life and begin a deliverance in Israel, he ultimately simply brought vengeance and death. Vows &
