Walter Dean Myers titled this book “Fallen Angels.” What is a “fallen angel?” In the biblical standpoint it is an angel that revolted against God. This book was mainly about people fighting in the Vietnam War. Some survived and some didn’t. The author titled this “Fallen Angels” because it showed that people were fighting for a cause, but at the same time killing and dying from this war. Angels usually are following a task and are on a mission of some sort. In the Bible they're often referenced as messengers, warriors, or servants of God . He rebelled against God and tried to convince God’s followers to leave with him. This was a great sin; one of the ten commandments, stated in the KJV bible, says, “You shall have no other gods before Me.” The commandments also condemn murder, stealing, envy, etc. In the Fallen Angels story, the soldiers were killing their opponents. God told us to love our enemies in Luke 6:27-32 and specifically said not to kill. Therefore, in a sense, the soldiers in this book were like the fallen angels in the bible; their actions were sinful and went against God’s word. In the story Fallen Angels, Perry distinctly felt a certain way when he had to convince people he was good. It states, “We were supposed to smile a lot and treat the people with dignity. They were supposed to think we were the good guys. That bothered me a little. I didn’t like that I had to convince anybody that I was the good guy… We, the Americans, were the good guys.” He did not want to be seen or imagined as a bad guy, but the actions of America created the idea, for some people, that he and the rest of the soldiers were bad. The author had a well thought out title. It was to represent a deeper meaning. The title illustrates how characters are good and bad fallen angels, similar to the ones that were found in the bible.
