It is stated, multiple times, how he gently carries the souls of people, which is different from humanity’s view of him. Death, in World War II, has become very busy with his job of collecting souls. It shows lots of people have recently died. I think it adds a subtle detail to the story. 2.
In The Book Thief by Marcus Zusak there are four main subjects, Love, Survival, Grief and Death. Death was the most recurring, it struck Liesel three times. Death came to Liesel in three ways, white, black and red. Death came to people in colors because he didn 't like what he did sometimes so he tried to distract himself with all the color things. The White death was Liesel’s little brother whom died in the white snow.
The book, “The Book Thief” by Markus Zusak, is not only written about the mass murder of millions of Jews, in addition, the book is from the perspective of no other than death itself. It displays what death feels with every soul he takes, seeing what goes through his mind with the job that is forced upon him. In the book, death ends the novel with “I am haunted by humans” (Zusak 550), the theme this quote allows the reader to infer is “there is a different side to every story”. Just like all of humanity, death did not ask to be here. There is a side to every story and death’s is that he is simply doing the task he was created to do.
Death is introduced immediately as the narrator of the book, and he reveals some key information about his personality. One of his most prominent characteristics is how he feels bored and irritated by his job, a feeling we can relate to; "The trouble is, who could ever replace me? Who could step in while I take a break in your stock-standard resort-style holiday destination...?" In this quote, Death is shown to be more human than his usual image suggests.
I think that death ends The Book Thief by saying, “I am haunted by humans,” because of the hatred and malice that humans possess. Firstly, on page 491, death describes how he was the one who served Hitler most faithfully, since he was always collecting millions of souls during Hitler’s reign, simply because there were some people that Hitler disliked and thought should be killed. This shows how hostile the human race can be, proving death’s point. Another detail that supports this statement is the Jew parades. The entire passage, voiced by Death, is told in a first person point of view. When a boy places a teddy bear on the dead man’s lap, Death describes it as a “smiling bear”. The phrase, “smiling teddy bear”, is repeated again later in the text. The word “smiling” is not something that is normally linked to death.
-Plot Overview- Liesel, a nine year old girl, loses her brother on a train ride to her new home in Molching, for her mother is too sick to care for her and her father was taken away for being a Communist. Once in Molching, she meets her new foster parents Hans and Rosa Hubermann on the dreary Himmel street which ironically translates to "heaven. " She's uncomfortable at first, but after a while she becomes comfortable and starts enjoying her new home. She even makes a new friend named Rudy who absolutely adores her. Shortly after her arrival, war begins, and the Hubermann's take in a Jew named Max to hide.
The past is an interesting and intriguing thing. It holds many life lessons, good and bad, and makes us realize certain things about it when the future comes around, that we never thought about in the moment. When we look back on the past, whether it involved us or not, it can strongly affect the way someone is living now, and their perspective on theirs and others lives. The Holocaust definitely had a huge affect on society and still does today.

Growing as a Character Every event in our lives happens for a reason, whether it is to learn from our mistakes or to gain experience from them. In Markus Zusak's novel “The Book Thief,” Liesel Meminger uses her experiences with living in the 1940s to learn life lessons and experience first hand the many terrible things Hitler is doing to people around her. She learns how to deal with the many obstacles that are thrown at her. Liesel grows as a character by following her step-father’s footsteps in being a kind and generous person, going through childhood with her best friend Rudy, and being aware of what is going on around her by learning from Max.
A natural human instinct is to do anything in order to survive. Though a person may not necessarily want to survive, the physical body of a person does. The body naturally will try to do anything in order to protect itself and survive even when the person does not notice. Survival comes at a cost that not all people are willing to pay. To survive there are struggles and obstacles that not all are willing to face, but to get through these obstacles an individual is one step closer to survival.
Markus Zusak has assembled ‘The Book Thief’ using a variety of narrative conventions. These include a unique narrative viewpoint, plot structure and use of imagery, all of which provide meaning to the reader. (33 words) A narrative’s point of view refers to who is telling the story. In this case Zusak’s narrator identifies himself as Death.

The characters in a story. They are hard to bring to life, yet a story would be incomplete without them. I love to write, and I often don’t have troubles creating my characters. But what makes every character stand out is that special thing about each and every one of them. That’s one thing that I loved about “The Book Thief,” by Markus Zusak.
